Lehigh Valley Zoo
Performs tasks associated with the husbandry and maintenance of native and exotic animals in an education- and conservation-oriented zoological park. The work requires less immediate supervision after experience is acquired; some assignments may include the limited supervision of other personnel. Will occasionally be involved in conservation and AZA programs. Expected to provide exceptional visitor service.
*Clean exhibits, holding pens and zoo grounds.
*Prepare established diets and distribute proper diets.
*Observe, evaluate and report animal behavior and conditions on a daily basis.
*Maintain exhibits, animal areas and associated fixtures and grounds.
*Report maintenance needs.
*Demonstrate knowledge of and implement zoo-wide and area emergency procedures.
*Perform routine animal handling.
*Assist the veterinary staff in capture and restraint, administration of prescribed medications and procedures as necessary.
*Implement behavioral enrichment for the collection.
*Participate in animal training plans.
*Interact with zoo visitors through animal presentations, scheduled and informal keeper talks and general, positive guest experience.
*Work cooperatively with other zoo departments.
*Perform other duties as assigned by the animal management team.
A 4-year degree in biology or related field or equivalent combination of experience and education.
*A minimum of 2 years of experience with exotic animal husbandry, 1 year paid.
*A proven record of animal training.
*Good verbal and written communication skills with people at all levels; have a positive attitude with a commitment to high standards.
*Highly motivated with the ability to both prioritize tasks effectively and to work on complex projects with minimal direction.
*Exhibit flexibility and willingness to enthusiastically work to achieve evolving goals.
*Good physical strength and endurance. Able to lift and manipulate grain bags, hay bales, equipment and crated animals.
*Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with ability to function effectively in high stress situations if needed.
*Attention to detail
2 years working with exotic animals. At least one year in a paid position.
