Manager, Interpretive Delivery

Reporting to the Director of Visitor Experience, this role is responsible for leading a creative, engaging, dynamic Interpretive Delivery Team, which educates and inspires our visitors through informative and entertaining interpretive programs, resulting in a desire to conserve aquatic ecosystems through awareness and action.

Please note that preference will be given to candidates with current legal eligibility to work in Canada (Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and open work permit holders). Candidates who are offered employment will be subject to a criminal record check.

Ensures the highest quality Interpretive Delivery experience for our visitors by:

  • Ensuring the highest standard and most engaging types of interpretive programming are created and delivered by the team;
  • Facilitating continual development and understanding of interpretation for employees and volunteers through training, evaluation and feedback.
  • Working with all departments to ensure effective interpretive operations across the organization including frontline and back of house teams;
  • Evaluating and training employees and volunteers delivering experiences on the floor and on the web to maintain VA standards and support seasonal features as needed;
  • Designing cross training roles with relevant teams to enhance the visitor experience and program reach;
  • Representing VA with relevant external groups and organizations for best practices and current trends in interpretation for application at VA;
  • Using the extensive resources of the Aquarium to ensure that current scientific and conservation information is incorporated into the interpretive visitor experience;

Oversees and monitors the Interpretive Department’s operations by:

  • Managing departmental budget and providing monthly status updates to the Director, Visitor Experience;
  • Maintaining key connections within VA at Frontline Managers, Exhibits Committee ,EMS, Animal Operations and other key committees as required;
  • Ensuring all training and certification requirements are up to date within the team.

Plans and develops departmental goals by:

  • Cascading Organizational and departmental goals into developing, conducting and evaluating innovative and effective interpretive programming;
  • Setting and managing departmental and employee goals and provides monthly status updates to the Director, Visitor Experience;

Provides management, coaching and mentoring to Direct Reports and contributes to the Visitor Experience and fosters the development of the team by:

  • Creating an environment conducive to individual development, productivity, and achievement while ensuring open lines of communication;
  • Ensuring that employees are well organized, sufficiently trained/cross-trained to perform their responsibilities, developed to their potential and deployed in a manner that permits a cost-effective operation;
  • Planning and facilitating individual touch bases (ITBs), group touch bases (GTBs), and skill-building sessions where appropriate;
  • Providing direction, guidance and training and support to team members and motivating staff to achieve a high level of performance and productivity;
  • Establishing performance objectives/goals, reviewing progress throughout the year,  and completing formal performance reviews for direct reports as required;
  • Recognizing and rewarding success and managing poor performance;
  • Monitoring and controlling expenditures to ensure that standards are met while continuing to maintain monthly budget. Tracking budget and maintaining financial records throughout the year;

Consciously desires to improve the Vancouver Aquarium and its processes by:

  • Promptly aiding in Emergency protocol;
  • Maintaining organizational safety standards;
  • Continually improving our impact on the environment and greening of operations through support of EMS protocols;
  • Actively demonstrating the Aquarium’s values and expectations for conduct;
  • Recruiting, hiring and promoting team members in accordance with standard Aquarium policies.
  • Performs additional duties of a similar nature or level as required.

Experience Required

Education and Experience •Post secondary degree in biological sciences, natural science education or other discipline as appropriate •Certification or training in interpretation •Degree in biology, natural sciences, education, environmental education or related field of studies, or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience •Minimum 5 years work experience in interpretation or related field •Minimum 3 years experience supervising staff in a management position •Current eligibility to work in Canada preferred. Technical Competencies •Proven ability to develop, deliver and evaluate highly engaging and effective interpretive programs for a variety of audiences •Excellent interpersonal skills, effective written and verbal communication skills and proven ability to liaise effectively with senior management, peers, subordinates and the public •Demonstrated ability to prepare and track budgets and business plans •Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor staff and volunteers •Strong computer literacy •Must be creative, assertive, flexible and proactive in problem solving •Strong background in customer service •Demonstrated project management and time management skills, with the ability to keep on task with strategic items while managing day-to-day responsibilities •Working knowledge of marine and conservation issues •Performance arts experience and a second language considered an asset •Previous experience interacting with the media on camera considered an asset •SCUBA certified. Cold water diving experience an asset. Must present diver’s logbook and certification card(s) to show proof of diving experience and be willing to complete a comprehensive diver’s medical evaluation •Active demonstration of the company’s values and code of conduct
