Program Animal Husbandry Coordinator

Virginia Zoo currently has a vacancy for a full time animal husbandry coordinator for the education program animal collection. This position has a strong focus on general husbandry responsibilities, operant conditioning and enrichment for all species housed within the zoo’s education program animal collection. Responsibilities include daily care and feeding of the animals, as well as maintenance of habitats, implementing enrichment and training programs, behavioral observations, record keeping and public interactions. Applicants must be able to work in a team environment and work in a variety of weather conditions. Previous experiences working with a wide variety of education program or ambassador animals, including mammal, bird and ectotherm species, is preferred. Experience with public interactions, educational presentations and working with volunteers is also preferred. This position is supervised by the Zoological Manager and will work in conjunction with the Program Animal Coordinator and other zoo staff in managing the education program animal collection.
 

Experience Required

Qualified candidates should have a bachelor degree from an accredited four year college/university program and a minimum of 1 year professional work experience, preferably in AZA accredited facilities. Candidates are expected to have a broad foundation of knowledge, skills and experience with the husbandry management of zoo animals, along with good understanding of behavioral management and preventative health care.

Salary

To be commensurate with experience.
