Summer Educator

The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications/resumes for a Zoo Summer Educator.  This position assists the Curator of Education and Interpretive Programs Coordinator in the operations of the Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park by leading the summer EdZoocation programs.

Approximate work schedule will be full-time from early May through the end of August.
 Essential Functions:
Assists the Curator of Education in developing, coordinating, instructing, and implementing education programs, supporting events and activities including classes and camps for youth, adults and families, youth volunteer program, behind the scenes tours and special events.  Delivers daily programing that includes zoo classes, Exploration Stations, arts and crafts, games and activities, as well as environmental education lessons.  Assists with preparation and maintenance of facilities and materials used in education programing.  Also assists with organization and maintenance of educational program supplies and aides the Education department in the maintenance of zoo graphics and helps keep the zoo's website updated.  May assist in supervision and mentoring of teen volunteers.  Other duties as assigned.

This position requires a high level of positive energy and attitude, self-motivation, strong willingness to work independently, demonstrates strong work ethic, and works well in team environments.
 Minimum Qualifications:
1.  Education:  Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an ability or aptitude to perform the above and related duties.  Current college level enrollment in biology and/or an education field of study is strongly encouraged.  A college degree in biology and/or an educational field is preferred;  AND previous public speaking and/or teaching experience to a variety of groups ranging in all sizes and age levels is a plus.  Well-developed interpretive skills or a willingness to learn. Experience in an informal education setting is preferred. Experience working with children is strongly desired;  OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2.  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Some knowledge of developing and presenting public informal education programs such as those in zoos and nature centers.  Ability to create and present exceptional and dynamic interpretive programs (formal and informal – featuring live animals).
Knowledge of conservation, natural history, biology or zoology, natural ecosystems, and conservation issues. Knowledge of principles and understanding of the process of learning and teaching.  A love and appreciation for wildlife and the outdoors.
Ability to operate a computer, Microsoft Office programs.  Experience in graphic design, Adobe products and website design a plus.
Ability to understand and follow routine verbal or written instruction; ability to develop effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, the public and volunteers.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a positive attitude to a diverse audience including, but not limited to: fellow employees, visitors and children of various ages.
Ability to interact with zoo guests courteously and offer proper attention at all times in a welcoming manner. Good customer service skills are required.
Ability to adapt quickly and be flexible in any scenario, as well as considerable patience. Lead and supervise program participants including groups of children and adults on a daily basis.

3.  Special Qualifications:

Must be able to work evenings, weekends, overnight, and holidays.  Must be flexible with schedule.  Must be able to stand for long periods and walk long distances; be able to work inside and outdoors in any weather.
Must provide proof of a negative TB test within the last 12 months before start date.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
City will provide uniform shirts and nametags.  Employee must provide own uniform pants and/or shorts.
Final candidate will be subject to a background check.
