Associate Director of Animal Husbandry

The Associate Director of Animal Husbandry, reporting to the Director of Animal Husbandry is responsible for the coordination and management of the living specimens and the maintenance of their life support systems.  This position supervises and manages Animal Husbandry staff.


  • Four (4) year degree in marine biology, with emphasis on Northwestern Atlantic fishes.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in a public aquarium husbandry/operations position.
  • Advanced knowledge of the operation and maintenance of aquarium & life support systems.
  • General knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing/operating procedures.
  • Strong command of the English language, both written and verbal.
  • Experience in preparing and conducting public educational programs.
  • Able to lift a minimum of sixty (60) pounds.
  • Able to negotiate various field conditions.
  • Able to work standing up for extended periods of time.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Valid SCUBA certification and collection experience.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, days closed due to inclement weather, and to travel for extended periods of time to perform collecting and other duties.


  • Assists Director of Animal Husbandry in establishing the Aquarium’s operational procedures in accordance with AZA standards.
  • Assists the Director and Senior Aquarists in the hiring, training and supervising of Aquarium staff.
  • Supervises and manages the husbandry staff in order to build and maintain a healthy animal collection.
  • Documents and communicates observations for review by the Director of Animal Husbandry
  • Oversees the acquisition, care and presentation of the living collection.
  • Works directly with contract veterinarians to assure animal health.
  • Maintains and purchases equipment, food, medicines and other supplies necessary for the operation of the department and maintenance of the living collection.
  • Participates in the collection and transport of animals from Long Island Sound and other locations for display in the Aquarium.
  • Supervises and participates in the maintenance of exhibits and life support systems.
  • Performs water quality analysis.
  • Maintains collecting and transport equipment.
  • Plans and helps design exhibits as part of the exhibit team.
