Animal Keeper and Behavior Internship

 

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is seeking applicants who desire a career in animal care and wish to gain hands-on experience.  This internship is designed to provide students with a well rounded experience that covers not only the physical elements of basic animal husbandry, but the behavioral aspect as well.   Interns will work side by side with experienced animal keepers during their daily routine, as well as design a project to be completed during the internship.  This internship is designed for college students who will use this experience in support of their school program (for college credit is required).

 

Duties:

  • Preparing diets;
  • Cleaning, maintenance and alteration/augmentation of animal enclosures, exhibits and facilities;
  • Interacting with the public;
  • Observing and possibly assisting in medical procedures;
  • Understanding and assisting with record keeping of daily activities, animal nutrition, training programs, etc.;
  • Observing and assisting in training programs, creating enrichment, and learning animal behavior;
  • Data collection for analysis;
  • Creating and/or evaluation of enrichment items;
  • Behavioral observations and interpretation for various needs including activity budgets and ethograms.


 

Experience Required

Requirements: An undergraduate enrolled in an accredited college pursuing a degree in animal science, zoology, biology, wildlife conservation, animal behavior, behavioral biology or other related fields; Must complete a minimum of 240 hours of service averaging approximately 24-40 hours per week, Monday- Sunday, 8:00am- 4:30pm; Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs; including maneuvering of heavy wheelbarrows, carrying bags of grain, and bales of hay; Work in a variety of weather conditions, and stand for long periods of time; Tolerance of strong odors, dust, hay and animal fur/hair/dander; Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite; Strong communication skills; Creative, analytical, and strategic thinking.
