Animal Care Internship
The Rolling Hills Zoo of Salina, Kansas, provides an interesting and rewarding learning opportunity. Interns become actively involved in the zoo’s animal care department. Types of Internship available: Large hoofstock, Reptiles/anteater, Carnivores, Kids Country Farm, Great Ape and Small Primate/mammal. Interns will learn the natural history of the animals in the area, all aspects of the daily animal husbandry – including cleaning, diet preparation, training and enrichment, behavioral observations. They may also create a project and present keeper talks performed in the area and will gain experience educating guests about the animals in their care.
Must be able to perform the physical challenges involved in the daily duties of the department including standing for long periods, walking long distances over uneven terrain, lift/carry feed or equipment 50+ lbs. Must be able to sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, and twist, reach above head, pull, bend, and climb stairs and ladders. Candidate must be able and willing to perform all above duties outdoors and in all weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
Rolling Hills Zoo offers the following options for Internships:
Summer: June, July, August - Deadline April 3rd
Fall: Sept, Oct, Nov - Deadline July 31
Start and end dates are flexible with a minimum lasting 10 weeks.
The purpose of the placements is to help the intern gain experience related to their education. The Rolling Hills Zoo will work with students to document necessary time or projects needed to gain university credit for the internship. We cannot provide transportation, housing, or a stipend. Position limited to US nationals. This is an unpaid internship.
Candidates selected for internship must pass background check and provide proof of negative TB test.
