Conservation Intern

Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s internship program is designed to provide an individual with a practical learning experience while gaining valuable knowledge related to his/her career goals. The Conservation Intern assists the Director of Conservation and Sustainability with the preparation and facilitation of conservation programs including field study, on-site sustainability programs, and other on- and off-site events. Our internships offer a hands-on opportunity to work in a conservation program in a zoological setting and require a commitment of 12 weeks.


REPORTS TO: Director of Conservation and Sustainability

DATES: Summer 2017, June 3 – August 12, 2017


The Conservation Internship program is designed to provide participants with practical learning experience and knowledge in the field of conservation. In return, the intern makes a significant contribution to the Conservation Program at Utah’s Hogle Zoo. Intern duties may include the following (may vary based on skill level and departmental needs):

  • entering conservation data
  • helping to organize supplies for conservation projects
  • participate in and monitor conservation programs
  • present conservation programs to the general public
  • conduct program evaluations
  • document conservation field projects
  • help develop and organize the documentation needed to support conservation and green team programs in various departments
  • participate in wildlife monitoring activities both on and off Zoo property including multiple day trips to research sites
  • opportunity to take part in related events (e.g. lectures, conservation events, etc.) that may arise and offer valuable experience
  • attend meetings with partner organizations
  • assist with the Zoo’s recycling  and sustainability program


QUALIFICATIONS: Be currently enrolled in a college or university, or have recently graduated. Have a minimum of one year of course work in a major field of study to be applied during the internship (e.g. education, biology, zoology, environmental science, etc.). Experience working in the field preferred. Demonstrated enthusiasm for and interest in working in the conservation field. Interns need to have a recent TB test, and tetanus shot. Because of the nature of working in the field, the applicant needs to demonstrate maturity, self-motivation, and an ability to follow direction. In addition, an aptitude for hiking, camping and working in outdoor conditions must be demonstrated.  A basic knowledge and understanding of computer word processing and PowerPoint is helpful. The ability to gain and hold a driver’s license is required. First Aid/CPR certified preferred.


WORK SCHEDULE: 40 hours a week for a minimum of 12 weeks. Interns are expected to work on holidays and weekends and some overnight trips.


COMPENSATION: The Conservation Internship is unpaid. Professional development opportunities will be available. Possible college credit is available for those able to receive it through their college/university. No housing provided.
