Utah's Hogle Zoo

Utah's Hogle Zoo

Special Education Intern

Organization: Utah’s Hogle Zoo (AZA Member)
Location: Salt Lake City, Utah, United States
Job or Internship: Special Education Program Intern

Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s internship program is designed to provide an individual with a practical learning experience while gaining valuable knowledge related to his/her career goals. In 2015, Utah’s Hogle Zoo became the first museum institution in Utah to offer informal science education to students with special needs. This dynamic program, “Zoo Just for You” is one of the first of its kind in the zoo industry and works with everyone from preschool-aged children to adults with disabilities. Students come to the Zoo and receive hands-on community-based instruction while applying skills they have learned in speech, physical and occupational therapies.

Under the supervision of the Special Needs Programs Instructor, the Special Education Program Intern may help develop new curriculum and outreach, work to make the Zoo more accessible and inclusive, help with onsite and offsite classes, and teach and supervise Zoo volunteers with special needs.

Our internships offer a hands-on opportunity to work with youth and the general public in conservation and environmental education in a zoological setting and require a minimum commitment of ten weeks.
