Denver Zoo


The Animal Care Intern-Felines, advances Denver Zoo's mission and goals by assisting the animal care staff in providing the safe exhibition, handling, feeding, and husbandry of animal species at the Zoo. The Felines intern will help keeper staff with the daily care of the animal collection. Daily activities include: cleaning and maintenance of yards and indoor animal areas, collection observations, record keeping, diet preparation, and enrichment. The intern will have the opportunity to observe training with all species.
This is an Unpaid Internship for Summer 2017. The anticipated start date is between May 1, 2017 and June 1, 2017. The anticipated end date is between August 1, 2017 and August 31, 2017 though the end date may be flexible.

Internship candidates will gain experience with carnivores in the zoological field. The candidate will have daily responsibilities and have the chance to observe training in the section and may be able to participate in a variety of small carnivore training. This internship will provide participants with a basic understanding of carnivore husbandry, operant conditioning and animal behavior. Applicants should be interested in pursuing a career in zoo keeping. Internships are offered every quarter.
Essential Activities and Duties:
Assists Feline animal care staff by providing reliable, competent animal care through the following responsibilities:
  • Cleaning/disinfecting of animal enclosures
  • Diet preparation
  • Enrichment distribution and maintenance
  • Exhibit repair and/or modification
  • Animal observation
  • Record keeping
  • Adheres to and promotes Denver Zoo's mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Denver Zoo's Safety & Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety & health regulations, procedures, and goals.
  • Value and consistently apply Denver Zoo's ROADMAP (Reaching Our Audiences by Developing Mission Aligned Programs) process and resources in engaging and educating guests at Denver Zoo.  
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Public Interactions: Intern must become knowledgeable on a variety of felids, canids and other small mammals. Intern may be asked to interact with the public.
  • Special Project: This may be a requirement of the school or may be assigned by supervisor.
  • Behavioral Training: Terms in relation to operant conditioning will be discussed. Intern may get hands on experience working with a variety of small carnivores based on skill level and willingness to listen and learn.
    Perform various tasks as assigned.
  • Working towards a Bachelor's Degree (or recently graduated within 1 to 2 years) in an animal-related or animal behavior-related field.
  • Previous animal experience in a formal or informal setting is preferred.
  • Work on weekends and holidays are required.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to pass drug and alcohol screening.
  • Ability to pass reference and background check.
  • Provide proof of a negative TB test result prior to start date.
  • Available part-time for a minimum of 200 hours within 6 months, or full time 40 hrs/week for up to 16 weeks depending on needs of the department.
