Internship-Toyota Elephant Passage-Elephants

The (Unpaid) Animal Care Intern-Toyota Elephant Passage-Elephants, advances Denver Zoo's mission and goals by assisting the animal care staff in providing the safe exhibition, handling, feeding, and husbandry of animal species at the Zoo. The Toyota Elephant Passage area exhibits over 10 species of animals native to southeast Asia including elephants, rhinos, leopards, fishing cats, otters, gibbons, and several bird and reptile species. The team also cares for another zoo area that exhibits hippos.
This is an Unpaid Internship for Summer 2017. The anticipated dates are May 5, 2017 to August 1, 2017 though the end date may be flexible.

The Toyota Elephant Passage Intern will support keeper staff with the daily care and maintenance of the elephant division. Daily activities entail observing and physically supporting all area work including: daytime planning, daily collection observations, attending area meetings, record keeping, diet preparation and administration including supplements/minerals/medications, behavioral enhancements (training and enrichment), and animal procedures and transports. Interns will only interact with division specified animals under the direct supervision of the keeper staff and managers. Other related care and maintenance will be supervised by keeper staff and managers.
Essential Activities and Duties:
  • Assists Toyota Elephant Passage animal care staff by providing reliable, competent animal care through the following responsibilities:
  • Cleaning/disinfecting of animal enclosures
  • Diet preparation
  • Enrichment distribution and maintenance
  • Exhibit repair and/or modification
  • Animal observation
  • Record keeping
  • Adheres to and promotes Denver Zoo's mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Denver Zoo's Safety & Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety & health regulations, procedures, and goals.
  • Value and consistently apply Denver Zoo's ROADMAP (Reaching Our Audiences by Developing Mission Aligned Programs) process and resources in engaging and educating guests at Denver Zoo. 
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Perform various duties as assigned. 
  • Working towards a Bachelor's Degree (or recently graduated within 1 to 2 years) in an animal-related or animal behavior-related field.
  • Previous animal experience in a formal or informal setting is preferred.
  • Work on weekends and holidays are required.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to pass drug and alcohol screening.
  • Ability to pass reference and background check.
  • Provide proof of a negative TB test result prior to start date.
