Interpretive Specialist - Monorail Driver - Seasonal

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for driving the Wilds of Africa Adventure Safari Monorail in the Wilds of Africa and interpreting the Adventure Safari, exhibits and animals seen on the safari. This job encourages and facilitates a strong team, work ethic and positive attitude in the work environment at all times. The Interpretive Specialist I will work with a team of drivers and interpreters to ensure that guests enjoy their safari adventure in a safe environment and interpret appropriately to provide fun and engaging experience that convey the Dallas Zoo’s Mission of Conserving Wildlife and Inspiring a Passion for Nature. This position is budgeted for a maximum of 29 hours/week.

Responsible for supervising and delivering a dynamic guest experience on a daily basis.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Helping to develop and present Adventure Safari programs that engage and inspire audiences through fun, exciting, and safe train rides that promote the mission of the Dallas Zoo.
  • Record-keeping and scheduling for trains. 
  • Ensuring all aspects of the Wilds of Africa Adventure Safari trains are running efficiently.
  • Maintaining building maintenance and appearance of the Wilds of Africa Adventure Safari trains, station and behind the scenes areas.
  • Effective communication and interface with various zoo departments.
  • Understand and uphold Zoo policies and protocols to ensure safe, efficient operations and positive guest experiences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Public presentation and interpretation experience strongly desired, with the ability to present to both small and large crowds.
  • Candidate must possess excellent organizational skills, impeccable time management, and the ability to function in a dynamic, team-oriented environment to succeed in this position.
  • Must be able to work as part of a team and independently to achieve positive results.
  • Must be able to perform the physical challenges involved in the daily duties of the department including talking for long periods, walking throughout the park, lifting/carrying equipment weighing approximately 50 lbs, sitting, standing, kneeling, stooping, crawling, twisting, reaching above head, pulling, bending, and climbing stairs and ladders. Candidate must be able and willing to perform all above duties outdoors and in all weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to stand unassisted for the duration of a monorail train ride which is a minimum of 20 minutes. If there are issues with the train, the duration could be more than an hour.
  • Must have a HS diploma or GED
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays and some evenings.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills required. 
  • Working use of Microsoft based office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish languages desired but not mandatory.
  • Valid Texas Class “C” driver’s license required to operate Outreach vehicles and reliable transportation.
