Herpetology Keeper II or III

Job Description:

Job Title: Keeper II Reptiles

Department: Herpetology

Reports to: Asst/Curator of Herpetology

Job Status: Full-time

Job Purpose: The Keeper II -Reptiles in our Herpetology Department is an experienced team player to help provide for the care and husbandry of the reptile collection.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain high level of performance of general keeper duties including animal care, facility maintenance, and visitor service

  • Participate and show leadership in one or more focus areas of research, conservation, training, enrichment, or other special projects

  • Represent the Reptile department on zoo committees and AZA taxon management groups

  • Maintain exhibits and holding areas

  • Participate and support collaborative efforts and ongoing projects with Research, Veterinary, Public Relations, Education, and other departments.

  • Must be willing to support Zoo Atlanta’s Vision, Mission and Values statement.

  • Any other miscellaneous projects/assignments assigned by Zoo Atlanta’s Animal Management team.



  • Minimum of three years’ experience with reptile husbandry at an AZA or related institution, or commiserate experience in the private sector

  • Demonstrated success in the care and breeding of amphibians and/or reptiles (particularly with crocodilians and/or venomous snakes)

  • Carpentry or other technical skills considered a plus

Special Skills and Abilities:

  • Possess good communication skills and ability to interact with public

  • Able to function as a team member and support Zoo Atlanta’s mission

  • Zoo Atlanta is open to the public 363 says out of the year, therefore, all positions at Zoo Atlanta may require employees to work some weekends, holidays and evenings.

EDUCATION: Four year degree in biology, psychology, zoology or related field (sufficient relevant experience will be considered in partial fulfillment of education requirement)

  • Candidates must be able to perform strenuous work and lift at least 50 pounds.


  • Must be able to work outside in a variety of inclement weather conditions.
