Senior Keeper/ Assistant Curator


African Safari Wildlife Park is currently seeking a full-time Senior Keeper/Assistant Curator. This position is a mid-level, supervisory position requiring the individual to be an active participant in the routine care, collection planning, and management of the entire collection of animals.

This position will work side by side with keeper staff and management daily.

  • Knowledge of animal husbandry in a wide variety of animal species.
  • Excellent people and team building skills
  • Knowledge of animal needs in exhibit design.
  • Veterinary technician skills helpful.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Excellent public speaking and communication skills.
  • Capable of problem solving and crisis management.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Experience in management preferred.
  • Will present a friendly, courteous and helpful demeanor to all guests at all times. 

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with large and small hoofstock is preferred including exotic ungulates
  • 5 or more years’ experience working with Animals in a professional setting
  • Capture and restraint experience
  • Experience with Computers, Microsoft Word, Excel, Dropbox

Job Description:  Senior Keeper/ Assistant Curator

Job Summary:  To oversee the entire African Safari Wildlife Park animal collection providing the best husbandry possible and guest services

Major Job Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Reports directly to the Park Forman and Actin General Manager
  • Responsible for maintaining current knowledge of all USDA, AZA, and ZAA standards of care and husbandry related to the animal collection.
  • Responsible for husbandry, maintenance and oversight of the entire animal collection.
  • Responsible for the completion of all daily animal husbandry and feeding.
  • Must be able to operate tractors, trucks, trailers, for lifts, etc.
  • Works with Head Keeper to ensure optimum husbandry of the animal collection.
  • Works with the Veterinarian to ensure optimum medical care of the animal collection.  Assists the Veterinarian in medical procedures when necessary.
  • In consultation with the Veterinarian, will be responsible for all animal diets and evaluation of nutritional needs of the animal collection.
  • Works with the Acting General Manager and Park Forman in exhibit design and alteration.
  • Responsible to assist in acquisition and disposition of animals according to all regulations and guidelines.
  • Responsible to assist in maintaining appropriate USDA records and reports and compliance with all state and federal regulations related to the animal collection.
  • Will assist the Park Forman in oversight of the daily operations of ASWP.
  • Will assist the Park Forman with maintaining and keeping current all Job Descriptions.
  • Responsible for training wildlife staff
  • May be required to travel or transport
  • Assist in the coordination and facilitation of animal training
  • Responsible for animal feed ordering and preparation
  • Other Duties as assigned
  • Ensure proper facility repair in accordance with USDA regulations (Lighting, shelter, etc.).
  • Assist the Park Forman in the management of hay field
  •  Accompany and contribute to Monthly self-inspections
  • Comprehensive understanding of all waterlines, wells, septic, electrical boxes, furnaces, boilers, camera systems, and AC.
  • Assist in fence, gate and road repairs
  • Assist in the training and supervision of seasonal staff, camel rides, education programs, guest and animal interactions
  • May be required to assist in guest and animal interactions

Essential Functions:

  • Walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull, bend, climb stairs and ladders, and carry up to 50lbs
  • Be able to stand for long periods of time up to 8 hours
  • We able to work in all weather conditions
