Grant Writer

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Grant Writer serves as the primary writer for Lincoln Park Zoo’s Institutional Giving team, with a focus on sharing impact through storytelling and donor-centric communications. Responsibilities include composing fundraising materials for foundation and government funders, collaborating with program staff to draft and submit grant proposals and reports, researching prospective foundation and government funding sources, managing a proactive schedule of grant submissions, and maintaining the team’s grants tracking system in The Raiser’s Edge database.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Write grant proposals, reports, letters of inquiry, and other fundraising materials to secure support from foundation and government funders
  • Compose donor correspondence, including cover letters and acknowledgements
  • Work closely with program and accounting staff to gather information necessary for grant proposals and reports
  • Work closely with development, program, and accounting staff to maintain proactive schedule of grant proposal and report preparation; manage grant solicitation and report calendars
  • Prepare and submit grant proposals and reports, including government grants; monitor all grant submissions to ensure accuracy and compliance with funder guidelines
  • Maintain current, supporting documents for grant proposals including operating budget, financial statements, board lists, etc.
  • Conduct prospect research and develop research profiles on prospective foundation donors and government funding sources
  • Accurately track proposals, gifts, actions, and constituent information for institutional donors in The Raiser’s Edge database
  • Support events, tours, and other stewardship activities as needed

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Professional and enthusiastic demeanor and commitment to the zoo’s mission and philosophy
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including editing and proofreading skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals
  • Superb project management skills, with proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines; meticulous attention to detail
  • Initiative and independence in carrying out responsibilities
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills; ability to interact courteously and respectfully; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with donors, volunteers, zoo visitors, general public and colleagues
  • Understanding of philanthropy and stewardship of foundation, corporate, and government funders
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel required; knowledge of The Raiser’s Edge or database management preferred; knowledge of Fastlane, Grants.gov, and Microsoft SharePoint a plus

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, history, or related humanities field

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 1-3 years experience in development or related field, including previous proposal writing experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work at computer and on phone for long periods
  • Ability to navigate zoo grounds and buildings in all weather conditions
  • Ability to drive electric cart

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Available to work an extended schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings and holidays according to demands of the role and tasks.
