Seasonal Teen Volunteer Program Assistant Denver Zoo

Denver Zoo seeks a passionate, detail oriented individual to serve as the Seasonal Teen Volunteer Program Assistant. The Seasonal Teen Volunteer Program Assistant works closely with Teen Programs and other Guest Engagement department staff to ensure the day to day success of Denver Zoo's teen volunteer program, Zoo Crew. This position is designed for a self-motivated, responsible person interested in supporting teen volunteers at an informal science institution.  The ideal candidate demonstrates an understanding of appropriate boundaries with teens and how to connect with them in a supportive and professional way.

Length of Position and Hours: This position is a temporary position ideally beginning in early spring and ending in late August. The typical work week is 40 hours per week with a schedule of 8am to 4:30pm, Tuesday thru Saturday in March through May. The schedule changes to Sunday thru Thursday from June through August. Due to the nature of the programs being supported, evening, overnight and weekend availability is required.

Essential Functions:

  • Program Support: Assists Teen Programs staff with the daily operations of the Zoo Crew teen volunteer program through communicating with volunteers, troubleshooting, data tracking (attendance and requirements) and individualized coaching support with teen volunteers.  Supports the Teen Volunteer Programs Coordinator in the upkeep of program materials, as well as planning for and assisting in volunteer trainings, workshops, leadership team meetings, overnight campouts and social events.  Refers all special requests and issues to the Teen Programs Coordinator.  May be asked to support other volunteer program areas, such as adult volunteers and guest engagement programming, on occasion.
  • Communication: Provides excellent customer service for Denver Zoo teen volunteers and guests. Proactively communicates with teen volunteers, parents, Teen Volunteer Manager, Coordinator, Specialist and other key Guest Engagement department staff relating to program needs.  Communicate with teens daily in morning huddles, on zoo rounds, in coaching sessions and throughout the day in the volunteer center.  Helps foster a positive and supportive Zoo Crew community.
  • Adheres to and promotes Denver Zoo's mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Denver Zoo's Safety & Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety, & health regulations, procedures, and goals.
  • Value and consistently apply Denver Zoo's ROADMAP (Reaching Our Audiences by Developing Mission Aligned Programs) process and resources in engaging and educating guests at Denver Zoo.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Represents Denver Zoo in a professional and positive manner.
  • Complies with all zoo policies and performs other supportive duties as needed.
  • Maintaining flexibility and a positive attitude in an ever-changing work environment.
  • Ability to successfully complete multiple tasks within deadlines.
  • Following all safety protocols and advising supervisors of safety concerns.
  • Perform various tasks as assigned.


  • High School diploma required and working towards a bachelor's degree or a bachelor's degree is preferred
  • Experience working with teens and/or volunteer audiences required (1 year or more preferred)
  • Understands the value of partnerships between adults and teens
  • Dynamic and enthusiastic presentation skills, gained from formal or informal teaching or presenting
  • Excellent and professional communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • Excellent organizational, word processing, and spreadsheet creation/maintenance skills
  • Ability to work independently & as part of a team
  • High level of self-motivation
  • General knowledge of biological and environmental sciences
  • Ability to work dexterously with hands and arms and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to pass drug and alcohol screening.
  • Ability to pass reference and background check.
  • Provide negative TB test result prior to start date if hired.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands for this position involves light lifting under 25lbs and also requires carrying, pushing, pulling, and occasional heavy lifting up to 50lbs. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk and listen.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to maneuver handle or feel objects, tools or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance; also, reach, stoop, kneel or smell.  Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception vision and ability to adjust focus.   Minimal crouching, crawling, climbing, and non-confined sitting are also required. The position requires both mental and visual concentration.

Work Environment:

This position requires a substantial amount of contact with staff, volunteers, and other departments. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and chemicals.  This employee will be required to have contact with animals. The employee may be exposed to chemicals and zoonosis. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

This is a seasonal hourly position and as such is not eligible for benefits at this time.
