This position is located in Toledo, Ohio, which has a low cost of living and great access to many beautiful areas of Northwest Ohio and Michigan along with many local entertainment districts and well-known Metroparks.
We are currently hiring a self-starting, influencing individual to, under limited supervision, manage, direct, and coordinate daily activities and programs for the Toledo Zoo mammal department (focus in small mammals and primates). Responsible for monitoring health and welfare of specimens under his/her jurisdiction. Develops and maintains departmental emergency procedures and safety programs. Assists the assistant director of animal programs and other managers to ensure proper care of animals and efficient maintenance of facilities which involves making rounds within department; talking with keepers about issues; trouble shooting for exhibit and husbandry needs; making veterinary rounds; setting guidelines for husbandry and breeding needs; and caring for, capturing, restraining, rearing and training animals. Will manage, direct, and coordinate department’s daily activities and programs which involve supervising department personnel to include instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining USDA and AZA standards; coordinating activities; acting on employee problems; allocating personnel; selecting new employees; and recommending transfers, promotions, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions. Communicates with assistant director of animal programs and other associate curator of mammals to convey information about personnel, facilities, and the collection that are significant to departmental operations, will represent the Toledo Zoo in AZA programs and activities as needed and also be responsible for other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology, or related field preferred; a minimum of two years curatorial/supervisory experience in a zoological setting; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer candidates to have expertise in Primates/Apes/Small Mammals. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the fleet insurance carrier.
