The Oregon Coast Aquarium is located in Newport on the Central Oregon Coast.  The Aquarium has been consistently rated a Top Ten Aquarium in the country.  As a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is held to stringent requirements for animal husbandry, education and conservation.  The aquarium takes pride in being one of the leaders in marine science education in Oregon.  This year we will celebrate 25 years of educating and entertaining over 12 million visitors.

Seasonal Aviculturist

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Routine care of the seabird aviary, turkey vulture exhibit, behind-the-scenes pelican habitat and holding areas.
  • Preparation of diets, feeding birds, cleaning the exhibits and service areas, monitoring all aspects of bird health and well-being, providing enrichment, making detailed behavioral observations, handling eggs/chicks during the breeding season, and accurate record keeping. 
  •  Interaction with and educational presentations for aquarium visitors and special groups is often required, including public presentations with live birds. 
  • Work in the bird holding and wild bird rehabilitation area may include frequent cleaning of bird housing and laundry, assisting with treatments and medical procedures, and care of sick and injured birds.  Courteous interaction with members of the public and staff is required.  
  • The person in this seasonal aviculturist position will work under the guidance of the permanent aviculture staff, but will be depended upon to work independently as well.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A degree in biology or zoology related field is preferred.  Experience in the husbandry of captive birds is preferred; preference will be given to those with operant conditioning experience.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use computers and standard, commonly accepted computer programs is required.  Ability to work under limited supervision, both independently and in a team environment.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs, stand or bend for extended periods of time, and walk on wet and uneven surfaces.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) seasonal position caring for the bird collection at the aquarium.  The duration of the job is 4 months (Mid-May through Mid-September; the exact dates to be determined).  Work takes place in all outdoor weather conditions and requires walking and climbing on wet uneven surfaces.  Will be expected to work weekends and holidays.
