Exhibits Technician I - Life Support Systems

The City of Virginia Beach Department of Aquarium and Museums invites your interest in the position of Exhibits Technician I – Life Support Systems for the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center's Exhibits Technician I for the Life Support Systems section will perform a variety of tasks as they relate to the operation, maintenance, and repair of all aquatic life support systems for the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. 

Duties will include but are not limited to:

Perform installation, preventive maintenance, and repair tasks on aquatic life support systems and related components; assist with repairs, installation, and maintenance of life support controls and monitoring systems to ensure proper operation and to prevent equipment failure.

Troubleshoot and repair control systems and mechanical equipment (e.g., electrical controls, pumps motors, compressors, ozone generators, electric motors, filters, foam fractionators etc...).

Interpret blueprints and equipment drawings.

Receive work order assignments from supervisors and generate work orders, progress reports, and daily log sheets.

Maintain communication with facilities team, husbandry team, and others regarding maintenance for each system to maintain the highest quality standards.

Assist with conducting and interpreting water quality tests and analyze data, and assist with corrections as needed.

Operate forklift.

Drive city vehicle to work related areas.

May travel for training and professional development.

Recommend and maintain the stock of required spare parts, tools, and equipment.

Maintain the highest standard of work area cleanliness and safety at all times.

May direct the work activities of other staff. Assist in training other staff, volunteers and interns.

Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will possess a two or four year education with degree in aquarium science, aquaculture, engineering, commercial water treatment, or related field. Experience maintaining animal aquatic life support systems; or previous work in a municipal water treatment plant, or a waste water treatment plant. Animal water quality experience. Experience in repair and maintenance of mechanical systems. Experience in the repair and maintenance of plumbing systems. Experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical systems. Aquatic Animal Life Support Operator (AALSO) certification. Experience working in an accredited Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) facility.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

This position is classified as an Exhibits Technician I on the City’s pay plan.  The salary range is $30,374.64 - $45,079.68.  The City offers an excellent benefits package with includes health, dental, and life insurance; retirement and savings plans; holidays, paid time off; as well as access to the Beach Municipal Federal Credit Union, a non-profit service agency which is owned and operated exclusively for City employees and their dependents.
