Zoo Crew Instructor

Lincoln Park Zoo is looking for fun and creative educators with formal or informal teaching experience with a passion for working with middle school aged youth, to join the camp team as Zoo Crew instructors. The two Zoo Crew Instructors will provide campers entering 5th- 8th grades with meaningful and memorable summer learning opportunities by developing curriculum using zoo-provided content and building in your own experiences and research. Instructors will be responsible for facilitating groups of up to 16 campers each week. This is a full time seasonal position that will extend from May 31st – August 25, 2017.
 
The interview process for this position will be in stages. If an application is selected, an e-mail directing the applicant to a pre-interview questionnaire will start the interview process. In-person interviews will be held Sunday, April 23, 2017 and Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Lincoln Park Zoo. If an applicant is invited to an in-person interview they must be available for one of these two dates.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop curriculum using zoo-provided content and building in your own experiences and research.
  • Help each camper develop and execute a research project based on an ecology or ethology focused topic.  
  • Working with a co-instructor, create productive schedules for your camp group and adapt it based on campers’ needs.
  • Deliver content in a fun and unique way that will engage and connect kids with the natural world.
  • Required to sleep over at the zoo four times during the summer and travel to offsite fieldtrips as part of the program.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe, well managed camp group experience.
  • Communicate effectively and consistently with parents of campers.
  • Effectively collaborate with the summer staff which will consist of 15 fellow camp instructors.
  • Work directly with a co-instructor in a professional, effective, and cohesive manner.
  • Serve as a camp role model, and an ambassador of Lincoln Park Zoo.
  • Provide mentorship for the Camp Teen Volunteers assigned to the camp group.
  • Accountable for accurate attendance sheets, accident reports, behavior reports, and timesheets.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Prior experience working with middle school aged youth (5th – 8th grade) in a formal or informal education setting.
  • Experience with and/or understanding of the scientific research process.
  • Excellent classroom management skills.
  • Exceptional problem solving skills with the ability to adapt to changing environments, along with organizational, logistic and operational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be extremely trustworthy and punctual.
  • Great sense of humor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental studies, biology, ecology, zoology or other science related field.
  • Previous teaching, facilitation, or interpretation experience in a zoo, nature center, or other informal setting is preferred.
  • Basic computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to remain on feet and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, reach, lift heavy objects, and climb.
