SUMMARY Provide diagnostic services, including gross necropsy examination and histologic review, of case materials originating from the collections at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium and the Lee. G. Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES include the following:
Emphasis will be placed on gross and microscopic diagnoses of case materials originating from the two facilities.
Perform pathology research for the benefit of both free-ranging and captive wildlife as time allows.
Establish and carry out day to day operating policies of the Zoo Hospital as relates to the Pathology Department.
Publish and present the findings of zoo and wildlife health research as time allows.
Leadership role in supervising personnel in pathology, primarily technicians, student externs and volunteers.
Apply new technologies and diagnostics in tissue sampling and evaluation in order to improve the quality of diagnostics and improve the health of wildlife.
Interact daily with curatorial and hospital staff, the latter of which includes 4 veterinarians and a veterinary intern.
Perform administrative duties as assigned by the Director of Animal Health.
Work with the Director of Animal Health, Senior Veterinarian, and Associate Veterinarians, to formulate animal health policy.
Conduct independent or collaborative research projects on wildlife diseases in a wide variety of species as opportunities present.
EXPERIENCE: Preference will be given to individuals with prior experience (1 to 2 yrs.) in zoo animal and/or wildlife pathology and/or who are Diplomates of the ACVP or equivalent.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum qualifications include a VMD, DVM, or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college, completion of an anatomic veterinary residency training program, and ACVP or equivalent board certification or eligibility.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to lift/move 50 lbs or more
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Zoo Hospital and separate necropsy facility. Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
Preference will be given to individuals with prior experience (1 to 2 yrs.) in zoo animal and/or wildlife pathology and/or who are Diplomates of the ACVP or equivalent.
