Zoo Camp Program Assistant

SUMMARY: This is a position for creative, enthusiastic, hardworking individuals with a strong interest in environmental education and working with children. You will inspire wonder, knowledge and action while guiding teachers, assistants, and volunteers as they instruct children ages 4-14. Successful applicants will be dependable, flexible, have a sense of humor, love for nature. Maturity and multi-tasking abilities are required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Assists the Director of Education and Zoo Camp Assistant Director with daily activities during camp hours.
  2. Assists with the training of new and returning Zoo Camp staff.
  3. Orders and obtains supplies used for the Zoo Camp program.
  4. Updates daily blog with photos and descriptions. This will include writing, photography & design work in WordPress.
  5. Provides support and supervision during the camp day.
  6. Fills in for Zoo Camp staff as needed.
  7. Builds and maintains a good rapport with Zoo Camp parents.  This includes daily communication; making phone calls, assisting with e-mails & fielding feedback.
  8. Enforces Zoo Camp policies with campers, volunteers, staff & parents in a safe, firm and respectful manner.
  9.     Provides administrative support including creating schedules, camp group assignments,      developing reports, etc.
  10.     Communicates effectively with members of other Zoo departments to support Zoo Camp.
  11. Ensures the safety of campers and staff while participating in Zoo Camp, including response to emergency situations, administering first aid & overseeing the check-out process to ensure a smooth, safe and efficient experience for all Zoo Camp participants.
  12. Interacts with Zoo guests courteously and offers proper attention at all times.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Ability to work full-time, Monday through Friday, for the entire camp season between the end of May to the end of August, and part-time for training starting in April or May.

            EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a background in education, biology, zoology, environmental studies, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have experience working with children in an educational or instructional setting (formal or informal teaching, camp staffing, tutoring, coaching, lessons, etc.)
  • Minimum two years of teaching experience.
  • First Aid and CPR certification required.
  • Successful completion of a background check and fingerprinting.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • The San Francisco Zoo encourages bilingual candidates to apply.
  • Teaching credential is a plus.
  • Experience with children with special needs a plus.
  • Experience working with and giving guidance to youth and adult staff and volunteers preferred.
  • Ability to work well collaboratively and manage time efficiently
  • Be highly motivated and innovative, well organized, eager to take on new tasks and meet commitments.

The employee must frequently lift up to 25 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often exposed to outdoor weather conditions. 

Salary: $17.50/hour

Note: The Zoo Camp Lead is expected to work all assigned weeks unless specific days off are approved by the Director of Education prior to employment.
 

Summer Zoo Camp will run Monday through Friday from June 5 through August 18, 2017.  Training will take place on a part-time basis in April or May.
