Zoo Camp Instructor

SUMMARY: This is a position for creative, enthusiastic, hardworking individuals with a strong interest in environmental education and working with children. You will inspire wonder, knowledge and action while teaching children ages 4-14. Successful applicants will be dependable, flexible, have a sense of humor, and a love for nature.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

  1. Assumes all responsibility for supervision of the children who are enrolled in the camp class and volunteers and/or interns who are assisting.
  2. Ensures the safety of campers, staff and guests at all times.
  3. Designs weekly lesson plans that correlate with the theme and goals of the class.
  4. Researches and creates games, activities and crafts for class participants.
  5. Implements and teaches lesson plans and activities.
  6. Maintains a clean and organized Zoo Camp environment.
  7. Works effectively as a member of a team.
  8. Interacts with Zoo guests and staff courteously and offers proper attention at all times.
  9. Supports both the mission of the Zoo and the related mission of the Education Department by performing other duties as assigned by Zoo Camp management, and/or the Director of Education.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Ability to work full-time, Monday through Friday, for the entire camp season between the end of May to the end of August.

            EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a background in education, biology, zoology, environmental studies, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have experience working with children in an educational or instructional setting (formal or informal teaching, camp staffing, tutoring, coaching, lessons, etc.).
  • Minimum two years of teaching experience.
  • Successful completion of a background check and fingerprinting.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • The San Francisco Zoo encourages bilingual candidates to apply.
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
  • Teaching credential is a plus, but not required.
  • Experience with children with special needs a plus.
  • Experience working with and giving guidance to youth and adult volunteers preferred.
  • Ability to work well collaboratively and manage time efficiently
  • Be highly motivated and innovative, well organized, eager to take on new tasks and meet commitments.


 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to bend, squat, talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands for grasping, fine work and assembly, reaching, kneeling, or twisting.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, use hands to push/pull, crawl, taste, or smell. The employee must frequently lift up to 25 pounds.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often exposed to outdoor weather conditions. 

Salary: $16.00/hour

Note: Instructors are expected to work all assigned weeks unless specific days off are approved by the Zoo Camp director prior to employment.
 

Summer Zoo Camp will run Monday through Friday from June 5 through August 18, 2017.  Training will take place the week of May 29th, with the possibility of a few additional days earlier in May.
