Saint Louis Zoo
The overall goal of the RMC is to increase animal population sustainability through evidence-based reproductive management. The RMC began as the AZA Wildlife Contraception Center, but in 2015, AZA expanded the scope of the Center to include enhancing reproductive success of pairs in AZA breeding programs. The Center works toward this goal by bringing together experts from within and outside the zoo community to identify reasons for failure, then to design and carry out research, and finally to implement programs that restore and maintain fertility and increase behavioral compatibility of pairs. Because reproductive success depends on many factors, informed by so many disciplines, the RMC helps coordinate actions of relevant AZA Committees and Scientific Advisory Groups (e.g. Animal Welfare Committee, Animal Health Committee, Reproduction & Endocrinology SAG).
Responsibilities: The overall responsibility of the position is to manage daily operations of Reproductive Management Center programs, which include providing information on contraceptive methods to the AZA community, filling orders for contraceptive products, filing FDA reports, monitoring contraceptive use in zoos and aquariums via surveys and management of the Center’s contraceptive database, helping coordinate research on contraceptive development and application, and representing the Center as an advisor to TAGs and the PMC. The Coordinator oversees the operating budget of the Center and produces financial reports.
Qualifications: Applicants should have a post-graduate degree in reproductive biology or related discipline. Because many of the duties entail interaction with staff at AZA institutions, members of the Center’s Advisory Board, and representatives of companies supplying contraceptive products to zoos, the successful candidate must have strong interpersonal skills and excel at oral and written communication. Project management and meeting planning skills are also desirable. Applicants must be proficient with Microsoft computer programs and data management and should have a record of scientific publication.
