Conservation Technician-Butterflies Disney's Animal Kingdom

The Conservation Technician will be involved in supporting our Reverse the Decline initiative by conducting research on native Florida butterflies and sharing their passion for conservation with guests visiting Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. The Conservation Technician will be involved in field work with associated butterfly and plant communities on Disney properties and key sites in FL and will be involved in aspects of data collection, analysis, outreach, and management for a variety of projects.  
 

Responsibilities :
  • Assist in data collection on specific research projects involving Florida butterflies, including monthly surveys in wildlife management areas and butterfly gardens.
  • Assist with butterfly husbandry and support projects that involve butterfly husbandry.
  • Assist in handling and transportation of butterflies to Disney’s Vero Beach Resort.
  • Interact with guests to communicate conservation messages about wildlife and wild places at Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts and Disney’s Vero Beach Resort.
  • Enter data and maintain databases for a variety of research projects.
  • Assist with professional communication of butterfly research (data analysis, writing, and formal presentations).
  • Assist with supporting conservation team guest and cast activities as assigned.
Basic Qualifications :
  • Experience with butterflies and/or insects and plant communities, or demonstrated experience with butterflies and/or insect oriented field research.
  • Experience with informal science education, especially with children and families.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific findings in professional venues.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Products including Microsoft Access databases
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds
  • Excellent outreach/guest interaction skills
  • Independence under challenging field conditions
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a team setting, as well as on an individual basis
  • Full availability with work schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays and rotating shifts
  • Willing to travel, has FL driver’s license (or willing to get FL driver’s license).
  • Ability to endure heat, humidity, biting insects, and other challenges associated with working in the field
 
Required Education :
  • A four-year degree with a major in Biology, Zoology, Conservation Biology, Wildlife Biology, or other related science majors
