Annual Giving Intern (Unpaid)


The Annual Giving Intern position is a part-time 12-week unpaid position (with flexible hours).  The intern will assist Lincoln Park Zoo’s Membership and Annual Giving teams with all aspects of membership administration, including: outreach and acquisition, member and donor customer service, member and donor retention and project evaluation.
This position provides an opportunity for hands-on, resume-building experience in the membership and development fields.


  • Develop new strategies to capture member email addresses and increase social media followers.
  • Assist with member and donor stewardship activities, including but not limited to: fulfillment, content creation and phone calls.
  • Work with supervisors to catalogue previous direct mail campaigns, analyze member and donor campaign test results, prepare internal reports and make strategic recommendations for future campaign strategy.
  • Other research projects as assigned.
  • Assist with Membership Hotline customer service.
  • Provide support for ADOPT and Membership fulfillment projects.
  • Administrative support.


  • Working knowledge of PCs; experience with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interest in analysis and customer segmentation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Discretion and ability to maintain confidences are essential, given access to confidential database and donor records.
  • Ability to represent Lincoln Park Zoo in a professional manner at all times.
  • Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, members, donors, volunteers, zoo visitors and general public.


  • To understand the role of development (membership, annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, institutional giving and corporate partnership) in a major cultural institution.
  • To gain first-hand experience in member and donor customer service and stewardship efforts.
  • To learn to organize and analyze campaign test data; to develop strategic recommendations based on key findings.


  • The ideal candidate is either working toward a Bachelor’s degree or is a recent college graduate.
  • Candidate will ideally be available to begin a part-time schedule in the spring/early summer.  Days and hours are flexible.
