Seasonal Keeper/Marine Mammals

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the daily food prep, cleaning, feeding and husbandry of the animals, in accordance with standards set by the Curator and the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
  • Reports unusual conditions or illnesses in the animals and assists in their treatment
  • Works with other Aquarium functions as needed and appropriate, such as volunteer training, daily public interactions and assisting with promotional events.
  • Maintains written and computer records relating to marine mammal collection
  • Demonstrates continued interest in advancements in the marine mammal field
  • Must be able to work as a part of a team

Experience Required

QUALIFICATIONS • Bachelor Degree in biology or zoology related field is preferred. • Experience in the husbandry of captive marine mammals, pinnipeds and sea otters is preferred. • Experience using operant conditioning is required. • Good writing skills, knowledge of computers and ability to use Word and Excel programs is required. • Good communications skills and ability to speak to audiences is required. • Ability to work independently, with limited supervision and in a team environment is essential. • Valid driver’s license or ability to acquire is required.

Further Comments

Work schedules are 40 hours per week, and will include weekends and holidays. Position is from May 14, 2107 through September 9, 2017. This position is typically performed outside - around water areas - in all types of weather conditions. The applicant must be able to stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to climb ladders and steps. The ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds is required.
