Public Relations Summer Intern (Unpaid)

Assist in the zoo’s internal and external communication projects, media relations opportunities, and events under direction of Assistant Director of Public Relations. The candidate will gain a solid grounding in the public relations skills needed to understand and navigate the media world for a not-for-profit organization.


  • Interacting with both internal and external audiences via telephone, e-mail and in person
  • Writing press releases, pitches, and calendar listings
  • Assisting staff with internal communication needs
  • Coordinating logistics for media interview opportunities and events
  • Producing background research on various zoo and aquarium or activist industry news
  • Creating media lists using Vocus/Cision software
  • Assisting in social media management and content creation
  • Assisting in media reports and impression tracking
  • Prepare materials for press kits and on-site events
  • Aiding day-to-day operational needs of communications department including but not limited to social media, photo and video projects, and office administration tasks


  • Gain a deep understanding of the inner working of public relations at a major cultural institution
  • Improve writing and multi-media skills
  • Gain experience in working across departments at an institution, particularly with events


  • Proven experience either through coursework or previous internship in the fields of public relations, communications, and/or journalism
  • Superior writing skills; must demonstrate experience with mass media writing
  • Highly-motivated self-starter capable of independent work as well as team projects
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite, knowledge of media monitoring services and/or video and photo editing software a plus
  • Ability to meet deadlines and to be organized
  • Consistently demonstrate professional work ethic, attire, and demeanor.
  • Intern must be able to work flexible hours including some early mornings, nights, and weekends as necessary, and walk/stand for extended periods of time.


  • Candidate must be a junior or senior currently enrolled in college who is receiving academic credit for the internship. Minimum GPA is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Time commitment will be three to five days a week; 20-35 hours weekly from May to August/September. Set schedule will be determined based on intern availability and needs of the zoo.
Candidates must include two to three writing samples with their applications to be considered.
