The OKC Zoo and Botanical Garden is accepting applications for internships in the conservation education department. Interns will gain in-depth, hands-on experience in informal environmental education. The responsibilities include teaching interpretive conservation education programs on-site and in outreach environments for a variety of age levels, assisting in maintenance of the biofact collection, developing teaching aids, and assisting with the development of new programs. Interns will also be trained in how to handle our level 1 outreach animals.
Summer Interns work 40 hours per week for 8 weeks or a pre-approved equivalent. The positions are unpaid and interns must provide their own housing and transportation. The OKC Zoo will work with Interns to meet requirements necessary to merit academic credit with their institution.
Requirements: Internships are for collegiate level students or recent college graduates. They must have good oral communication skills, independently understand and follow directions, and maintain a calm manner around animals. They should be able to walk, stand, sit, bend, stoop, climb, kneel, push, lift, and carry objects weighing more than 25lbs. Interns also need strong sensory skills, including eyesight and hearing, and be able to work outdoors in extreme weather and noise conditions. Teaching experience is preferred, but not required.
Candidates selected for internships must pass background check, drug and alcohol screening, and provide proof of a current TB test.
