Oklahoma City Zoological Trust & Botanical Garden

Animal Management Intern

The OKC Zoo and Botanical Garden is accepting applications for internships in the areas of apes, fish, birds, children’s zoo, hoofstock, marine mammals, pachyderms, and reptiles & amphibians.  Interns will gain in-depth, hands-on experience to provide excellent care for our diverse collection.  The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, exhibit cleaning and maintenance, record keeping, diet preparation, enrichment, and assisting with guest interactions.  Interns will also learn about operant conditioning and conservation.

 

Summer Interns work 40 hours per week for 8 weeks or a pre-approved equivalent.  The positions are unpaid and interns must provide their own housing and transportation.  The OKC Zoo will work with Interns to meet requirements necessary to merit academic credit with their institution.

 

RequirementsInternships are for collegiate level students or recent college graduates.  They must have good oral communication skills, independently understand and follow directions, and maintain a calm manner around animals.  They should be able to walk, stand, sit, bend, stoop, climb, kneel, push, lift, and carry objects weighing more than 50lbs.  Interns also need strong sensory skills, including eyesight and hearing, and be able to work outdoors in extreme weather and noise conditions.  Animal husbandry experience is preferred, but not required.

 

Candidates selected for internships must pass background check, drug and alcohol screening, and provide proof of a current TB test.
