Denver Zoo Security Specialist

Denver Zoo seeks a customer service oriented Security Specialist to join our Guest Operations team. The Security Specialist advances Denver Zoo's mission to secure a better world for animals through human understanding by providing and maintaining a safe and secure environment for visitors, customers, staff, and animal collection.  As important, our officers are also our front-line customer service representatives.

Essential Functions:

  • Adheres to and promotes Denver Zoo's mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.
  • Ensures the safety of zoo guests, staff, and animal collection by patrolling zoo grounds and public rooms.
  • Contributes to the customer service mission by assisting visitors, customers, and staff.
  • Assists with visitor flow wherever necessary, including but not limited to moving lines at the main gate, assisting with visitor check in at the main gate and assisting with parking flow.
  • Ensures and protects zoo's admission program by monitoring the Main/Exit Gate.
  • Examines doors, gates, etc., to determine that they are secure.
  • Monitor CCTV.
  • Maintains knowledge of current emergency procedures and responds to zoo emergencies, as appropriate.
  • Strives to carry out all zoo departmental requests efficiently, correctly and timely.  These include but are not limited to after-hours zoo/parking garage operation and reserved parking for meetings.
  • Assists co-workers, as needed.
  • Responds to emergency calls from security or other zoo staff to prevent theft, property destruction, or vandalism.
  • Permits authorized persons to entry property.
  • Administers first aid to sick or injured employees, visitors and customers, and contacts emergency medical providers for assistance via 911.
  • Officers may have to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Officers may be required to shovel snow and dispense ice melt and/or sand.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Denver Zoo's Safety & Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety, & health regulations, procedures, and goals.
  • Value and consistently apply Denver Zoo's ROADMAP (Reaching Our Audiences by Developing Mission Aligned Programs) process and resources in engaging and educating guests at Denver Zoo.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Performs various tasks as assigned.

Experience Required

Qualifications: High school diploma or general educational degree (GED) OR 3+ months related experience and/or training OR equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience in security, loss prevention, or law enforcement is desirable. Demonstrated fluency in conversational Spanish is a plus. Clear driving record. Ability to walk (80 acres) and/or stand up to 8 hours daily in extreme cold and extreme heat. Ability to respond quickly to emergencies. Ability to shovel snow and dispense ice melt and/or sand. Ability to care for and properly maintain Denver Zoo equipment including, but not limited to, radios, computers, and vehicles. Computer skills are highly desirable. Excellent customer service and problem solving skills. Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills. Must be able to read, write, and clearly speak EnglishTeam player with the ability to work independently. Respect for confidentiality. Ability to lift and/or move 50 pounds. Ability to obtain a Red Cross CPR (adult, child, infant) and basic first aid certificate. Ability to pass a background check, Motor Vehicle Records review and drug screen. Additional background check may be required by the state of Colorado. Provide proof of a negative TB test if selected for hire. Licensure and Certification: Possession of a valid Colorado Class "R" Driver's License within three months of hiring.

Salary

Dependent on Experience-Negotiable, hourly
