Development Director

General Statement of Duties

Maximize contributions and advocacy to support the Museum’s engaging mission to connect people to nature through educational experiences. Responsibilities include establishing goals, planning, budgeting and administering all development activities of the Museum including Annual Fund, Planned Giving and Capital Project solicitations, Grants and fundraising events. This position recognizes the capacity to achieve greater results by integrating skilled volunteers and leveraging their diverse knowledge and abilities. Reports directly to the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the Executive Director to prepare, conduct, and evaluate a development plan that incorporates all fundraising activities of the Museum and is approved annually by the  Fundraising Committee of the Board of Trustees;

  • Serve as the major gift officer for the Museum and manage a portfolio of 75-100 prospects;

  • Supervise staff including: Assistant Development Director, Development Services Manager, Development Associate – Grants and Development Associate –Annual Fund.

  • Serve as staff support for the Fundraising Committee and direct strategic and operational planning for all staff and volunteer committees related to fundraising;

  • As Department Head, provide administrative leadership to the Museum;

  • Work closely with the Marketing Director to promote and integrate fundraising goals with the Museum’s marketing, membership and guest services goals where appropriate;

  • Plan and track the annual budget for all development functions based on approved annual goals;

  • Oversee all sponsorship solicitations and grant proposals for Museum events, exhibits and programs;

  • Oversee and ensure accuracy of comprehensive records system to track donors, record donations and identify prospects;

  • Approve and coordinate all donor communication and recognition activities.;

  • Strategically manage volunteers and their applicable skills to strengthen the Museum’s mission and commitment to the community.

Experience Required

Qualifications Creative, results driven high performer; Demonstrated success in major gift fundraising and obtaining funds through grant writing and written proposals; Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and facilitation skills with multiple levels of external partners and internal staff; Energetic, constructive attitude with ability to view opportunities from a variety of perspectives; Bachelor’s degree required; Six years of experience in non-profit management in areas of fund-raising and budget preparation, at least three of the six years in a supervisory capacity; Thorough understanding of the development process and an ability to develop policies and procedures to support it; Experience in managing staff personnel, including hiring, training/evaluating personnel; Strong computer competency, including a facility for understanding database functions and financial planning software.
