Director, Integrated Media and Live Presentations

Shedd Aquarium is a nonprofit organization dedicated to animal care and welfare, conservation research and public education. Situated on the shore of Lake Michigan, Shedd is home to nearly 32,000 aquatic animal representing more than 1,500 species of fishes, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, birds and mammals from waters around the world.
The Director of Integrated Media and Live Presentations provides vision and creative direction for Shedd’s media projects and live presentations.  Leveraging media, technology and the art of storytelling, s/he will employ creative approaches to engage and teach guests about the beauty, wonder and natural history of aquatic animals.  The director will collaborate with Shedd’s experience team to develop media for  presentations, exhibits and other channels.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate commitment to Shedd's vision, mission and values.
  • Oversee the development of live presentations that teach and engage guests. These presentations may include floor chats and live aquatic presentations.
  • Partners with internal and external teams to ensure live presentations are participatory, educational, and accessible for all guests.
  • Oversee, coordinate and manage the development of creative storylines and concepts for video, multimedia, and interactive content aimed at increasing public engagement and understanding of the animals in our care.
  • Collaborate with in-house production team to design, storyboard, produce and test various approaches to creating and displaying interactive content within various user interfaces, meeting accessibility standards and principles of universal design.
  • Oversees quality control of live presentations, media and personnel delivering engagements.
  • Collaborate with team members to select and train live presentation narrators.
  • Supervises an integrated media graphic designer; provides art direction to videographers, editors, lighting, sound and media designers; ensuring all elements are used cohesively to complement the environment, stories and animals in our care.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in a creative field (theatre, film, production, music, art, etc.) is strongly preferred.  However, a substitution of equivalent experience would be considered for a top candidate.

  • Minimum seven years’ experience in theater direction or production, including 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong experience in creative story development, and visualization
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal are crucial.
  • Knowledgeable of the relative pros and cons of different media types, and delivery formats.
  • A creative approach to storytelling which leverages the most effective medium for the desired outcome and experience (audio, video, interactive, gaming, etc.)
  • Excellent client relationship skills.
  • Strong personal network among a variety of related disciplines, such as theater, music, production technology and design. Experience working around animals and working closely with animal training staff preferred.
