REPORTS TO:  Director of Conservation Education





Under the direction of the Director of Conservation Education, s/he will conceptualize and oversee the development of mission related, educationally meaningful and cost effective programs that generate significant earned income and grant support. S/he will ensure that there is a high level of program quality, and that programs align with the departmental strategic framework and demonstrate impact. This full-time position is an integral part of the Lehigh Valley Zoo




  • Assists the Director of Education in developing, implementing, and evaluating on and off site programming.
  • Works collaboratively with Education Director in proactively seeking opportunities for revenue generation.
  • Develops relationships with public, and private schools, PTA’s, Boards of Cooperative Educational Services and other education related entities
  • Develops strong working relationships with leaders in other departments to create a dynamic network that cultivates innovation and team development.
  • Develops program ideas for grants, writes grants and once awarded, oversees all aspects of the programs and ensures compliance with all grant requirements.
  • Assist in developing and implementing teacher workshops.
  • Support the Director of Conservation Education in the creation of innovative curriculum that inspires and fulfills the needs of primary and secondary teachers in meeting Pennsylvania’s educational standards.
  • Support the creation of innovative and attractive adult and family oriented programming that fulfills the needs and desires of the community and encourages return visitation of our general audience.
  • Support the creation of programming attractive to a variety of sizes and types of groups.
  • Collaborates with representatives from the community to provide programming that promotes the Zoo mission
  • Manage interpretive messaging of the Zoo (graphics, presentations, website, etc.) including researching technologies and methods, writing, and implementation, reviewing and evaluating interpretive content.
  • Ensure all interpretive staff materials are available
  • Ensure programming meets Pennsylvania and Federal Standards for Education (STEAM)
  • Research and write grants in order to assist in funding for educational programs
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate docent and guest ambassador program
  • Train Docents and Guest Ambassadors 

·         Assist with phone calls for all programming



a.    Set-up and develop on-site and off-site education programs. 

b.    Coordinate, schedule, confirm, set-up, and present educational programs both at the Lehigh Valley Zoo and in the community.

c.    Research educational information for training, programming, exhibit graphics, newsletters, activity guides, and other informational projects.

d.    Prepare and organize teacher workshops.

e.    Education Programs - gather materials, prepare and gather animals, set up materials, facilitate the program, return animals to their enclosures, place materials back to proper location, clean-up.

f.     Prepare and facilitate Zoo Tours, Nature Trail Hikes, Exhibit Programs, Creek Studies, and other themed programs.

g.    Prepare and facilitate on-site programs-including penguin programs.

h.    Prepare and facilitate programs during scout events.

i.      Prepare and facilitate Zoo Reach Programs-including penguin programs.

j.      Prepare and facilitate Explore and Snore Program.

k.    Prepare and facilitate Zoo Camp.

l.      Assist with the docent program.

m.   Prepare and facilitate Birthday parties-including penguin parties.

n.    Assist with preparing and facilitating educational Community programs.

o.    Organize materials, keep workspace, classrooms, etc clean, neat and organized.

p.    Directly communicate with the Director of Conservation Education in terms of education programs, Ambassador Animals and other related matters.

q.    Coordinate Job Shadows with interested individuals

r.     General maintenance as needed.

s.     Assist with the care, training, and enrichment of Ambassador Animals; including African penguins.

t.      Perform other related work as required.




Bachelor’s degree in education, biology, environmental science or related field. 



Experience working in a school, education department at a zoo, museum, or informal learning center.  Experience with STEAM Education initiatives and State education standards a must.  Knowledge of the principles and practices of educational program development. Knowledge of learning theories, interpretive techniques, and teaching methods.  Skill in teaching all age levels on a variety of topics. Effective presentation skills. Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to work as a team or independently.  Ability to coordinate a variety of work activities and to ensure the timely completion of assignments.  Highly motivated and organized with attention to detail.  Knowledge and skill in husbandry and handling animals.  Ability to use computers and computer technology.


 Demonstrated experience in program development, curriculum design and assessment


 Experience writing and managing federally funded grants and other philanthropic investments




·         Ability to receive instruction and carry them out with relative independence. 

·         Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

·         Ability to communicate technical information to a variety of audiences.

·         Must have skill to foresee and apply safety precautions applicable to the work. 

·         Ability to see, hear and communicate clearly. 

·         Must possess valid driver’s license. 

·         No allergies to plants and animals which may interfere with the ability to work. 

·         Ability and willingness to remain on feet or sit for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend, and move/lift 60lbs. 

·         Ability and willingness to work outside in all weather conditions. 

·         Ability and willingness to work flexible schedule, which may include weekends, holidays, evenings, overnight and after hours assignments. 

·         Satisfactory results required on criminal record check and child abuse history clearance.

·         Ability and willingness to work overtime required as a result of short deadlines.
