Education Specialist

Primary Tasks and Responsibilities                          

  • Create, develop and lead summer camps based around animals, science and nature
  • Deliver presentations to groups of all sizes and ages utilizing live animals; presentations located on and off grounds and can be in or outdoors. 
  • Incorporate state standards and Chehaw’s conservations message into school presentations
  • Lead outdoor nature based programs on grounds, including field work, nature hikes, and tours
  • Supervise and direct youth volunteers while they deliver programs, assist with camp and perform animal care to our education animal collection

Position Requirements                                                

  • Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in animal ecology, biology, education, environmental education, zoology, or a related field
  • Two or more seasons of camp experience, minimum of one paid season
  • Knowledge of education principles and an understanding of the process of learning and teaching
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse audience including, but not limited to: fellow employees, visitors, and children of various ages
  • Ability to adapt quickly, be flexible in any scenario, and demonstrate considerable patience while leading and supervising program participants including groups of children and adults on a daily basis
  • Possess excellent time management skills and the ability to multi task
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions.
  • Ability to work both as a team and independently
  • Must be willing to handle and care for a variety of different animals including:  snakes, spiders, frogs, birds, and small mammals
  • Must be able to work in hot and humid outdoor conditions up to 75% of the work day
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs on a regular basis and 50 lbs occasionally

Salary

$10-11 per hour
