The Dallas Zoo’s College Internship Program provides an interesting and rewarding learning opportunity for currently enrolled undergraduate or post-graduate students at an accredited college/university in the United States. Interns become actively involved in the Zoo’s animal care departments, conservation/research efforts, operations, and administrative positions.
This internship would be shared between the Manager of Applied Behavior and Welfare and the Dallas Zoo Registrar. This internship would provide exposure to the Operant conditioning and Enrichment programs, their development, implementation, and continual refinement. Additionally, the records portion would pertain to the records supporting these two programs, reviewing what is recorded and where, looking for consistency and trends. Providing computer support and insight as the programs continue to move forward.
The intern would shadow the Manager of Applied Behavior during rounds and be present for training sessions unless the animals involved would be adversely affected by a new member being present, for example, some or all of the great apes. Additionally, the intern may assist with re-organizing and/or entering approved enrichment items into the ZIMS database module.
The Registrar will provide support as needed for access to ZIMS, ZIMS search methods and help identify some of the inconsistencies for discussion and possible resolution with help from the intern.
Interns work 20-40 hours per week for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks during one of the sessions listed below. The purpose of the placements is to help the intern gain experience related to their education, and most are unpaid positions. The Dallas Zoo will work with students to document necessary time or projects needed to gain university credit for the internship. Unfortunately, we cannot provide transportation, housing, or a stipend. Position limited to US nationals.
The deadline for returning the 2017 Summer internship packet is March 10, 2017.
Candidates selected for the internship must pass background check and TB test.
