Water Quality Manager


Position: Water Quality Manager


Under the direct supervision of the Director of Operations, the Water Quality Manager functions as a working supervisor, responsible for the daily monitoring of water conditions, insuring clear and clean water every day, and the preventative maintenance of all water and filtration systems within animal and public areas. Supervises approximately four water quality technicians.

Job Responsibilities

  • Consult and coordinate with curatorial staff, veterinary staff and appropriate zookeepers and aquarists to achieve the highest quality of animal care through management of water quality. Primary point of contact for WQ tasks. Performs and/or assigns tasks as appropriate.
  • Hires and trains a support staff to handle all the issues that affect clear and clean water quality, including communication with appropriate staff and how, and when, to submit work orders.
  • Organize educational training workshops for staff.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, maintain and repair life support and other public water systems, including keeping a log for determining equipment obsolescence.
  • Conduct daily and weekly water quality test. - PH, bromine/chlorine, alkalinity, coliform/bacteria, etc. and adding chemicals as appropriate. React to Waypoint Analytical results.
  • Inspect every pump room every day to determine the pump status and to correct any deficiencies that are found.
  • Daily visual inspection of all water systems - address issues as necessary.
  • Build relationships with the city plumbers and electricians to assist in the maintenance and repair of water system equipment. Ensure work orders are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Perform other related or non-related duties as assigned in order to achieve the goals and mission of the Zoo.


Education and/or Training

Bachelor's degree, preferably in science field with knowledge of complex water quality systems, including ozone generators. Knowledge of AZA and USDA standards of aquatic and non-aquatic species a plus.


Four to five years experience in an aquarium or zoological field with strong emphasis on closed marine systems and water quality testing required, also a strong emphasis on managing team members, and managing daily standard operational procedures(SOP).
