Are you a revenue generation and marketing professional interested in conservation and animals? The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) is seeking to hire a Revenue Generation and Marking Lead to manage all new and existing revenue operations and develop and implement marketing strategies that draw visitors and encourage their participation in the full range of experiences, opportunities, and amenities.
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute is a leader in the conservation, care, exhibition, and research of wildlife and habitats. NZCBI’s employees in the nation’s capital, Virginia, and worldwide and as part of the Smithsonian make it prominent in national and international affairs involving conservation, zoos, wildlife, public outreach, and biological research.
The ideal candidate for this position will have proven multi-year experience in revenue generation, marketing, and sales operations in a fast-paced environment. They will bring to this role a mix of revenue optimization, traditional reporting and analytics, and strategic planning. Through ongoing forecast management, trend analysis, and business case development, they will identify opportunities for smarter NZCBI investments. Through regular delivery of insights, they will enable optimization and strategic planning of program activities to help NZCBI achieve its revenue objectives.
The ideal candidate for this position will join a dedicated team of business professionals wearing many hats. While revenue generation and marketing will be the primary focus, this candidate will be looked to as an expert on a wide variety of other customer experience focus areas allowing for successful completion of the NZCBI and Smithsonian missions.
The ideal candidate will be very organized and able to meet deadlines. They must be an excellent project manager, nimble enough to move between several concurrent projects. They must be able to communicate effectively with the NZCBI senior team, other Smithsonian organizations, professional organizations, corporations, companies, vendors, and private institutions. Patience and the ability to think outside the box are highly valued qualities in a successful candidate.

- Provides direct oversight and management of the revenue processes at NZCBI, ensuring tight fiscal controls are in place. Provides financial projections for all revenue activities, strategically tracks incoming funds, and manages long term financial planning for revenue and marketing activities.
- Develops strategies to increase revenue opportunities at NZCBI to include both short- and longrange planning. Develops and implements marketing strategies to draw increased visitorship and encourage visitor participation in the full range of experiences, opportunities, and amenities with an eye towards increasing overall revenue.
- Serves as a senior advisor to the Associate Director of Business, Innovation, and Technology, other Associate Directors, the Deputy Director, and the Director of NZCBI on issues surrounding managed programs and interactions with outside agencies, such as Smithsonian Enterprises. Develops market projections and business case analyses with an eye towards providing decision quality information to leaders to make the best business decisions. Provides regular financial reporting and revenue projections to the Director, Deputy Director, and members of the Senior Team.
- Develops administrative documentation in support of contracting, procurement activities, financial tracking and management, budgeting, business case analyses, revenue projections, and project management. Conducts market studies to assess the performance of current activities against the larger market and makes recommendations for adjustments.
Expert ability to develop market projections and business case analyses to allow executive leadership to make informed decisions.
Expert skill in program management work involving oversight of programs to integrate new revenue opportunities, functions, processes, and operations.
Mastery skill in providing financial projections, strategically tracking funds, and managing long term financial planning for revenue and marketing activities.
Ability to work with a wide range of internal and external organizations, developing approaches to address significant areas of disagreement and negotiating to enact approaches of mutual benefit.
Demonstrated skills in drafting internal policies for unit-wide implementation.
Demonstrated skills in establishing program objectives and units of measure for determining when objectives have been met.
Ability to make recommendations for actions when adjustments or a different course of action is necessary and take actions necessary to correct any identified problems.
Expert knowledge in the development of strategies to increase revenue opportunities to include both short- and long-range planning

This position is located at NZCBI Headquarters 3001 Connecticut Avenue NW Washington DC 2008. It is accessible via mass transit, and onsite employee parking is currently available at no cost. Hybrid Telework Schedule Eligible, however, a minimum of 3-days onsite per week is required due to the nature of the position. Additionally, there is a requirement for this position to regularly visit NZCBI’s Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute campus located in Front Royal, VA.
