Browse Gardener- PT

Being a part-time (20-29 hr./week – year-round) Browse Gardener at the Zoo’s White River Gardens requires an energetic, motivated gardening/landscaping expert who thrives on physically demanding work and prefers working outside. 

Our Horticulture team manages the Gardens, cultivates plants in our majestic glass conservatory, and maintains all of the landscaping throughout our 93-acre campus.  Assisting with clearing snow from Zoo grounds is also part of the job.  Being part of this team requires physical stamina, excellent interpersonal skills, a positive outlook, and the ability to work independently and productively with little supervision. A strong understanding of irrigation systems and troubleshooting is preferred.

Ideal candidates are committed to advancing the Zoo’s mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world.  The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the Zoo’s plant collection which features numerous species of trees, shrubs and perennials. Responsibilities include all aspects of grounds maintenance from weeding and watering to design and installation.  Experience with irrigation systems, pest management and power equipment are a strongly preferred. 

Position Requirements and Experience (Note: there are strenuous physical requirements to this position including but not limited to):

  • Must be 18 years of age with a valid Indiana’s driver’s license insurable by the Zoo’s insurance.  A requirement of this position is the ability to drive a truck and pull a trailer. 
  • Ability to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions and temperatures.
  • Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
  • Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium while performing various jobs.
  • Exceptional visual acuity is required, along with the ability to communicate, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a two-way radio.
  • Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human bloodborne pathogens. Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.)  Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines.
  • Prior work-related experience preferred. College course work in a suitable field may be substituted for work experience.
  • A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Relevant vocational certification/ associates or bachelor’s degree, preferably in horticulture / forestry/ or a related field is a plus!


Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of pre-employment testing including a criminal history and driving record check, and a drug test.  The Indianapolis Zoo is requiring all Zoo employees and volunteers to be Covid-19 vaccinated unless individuals require a medical or religious belief accommodation.  If hired, vaccination must be completed prior to first working day or accommodation request must be approved prior to first working day.
