Reports To: Vice President of Finance & Administration

FSLA Status: Salaried, Exempt

Tulsa Zoo Management, Inc. (TZMI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission of “Connecting, Caring, Advocating for Wildlife, People, and Wild Places.” A dynamic group of passionate individuals brings the zoo to life each day, 365 days per year, caring for animals, greeting guests, educating the public and managing the facilities.  Each member of the team is integral to the success of the zoo as a key asset in the City of Tulsa and the Northeast Oklahoma region, delivering recreational opportunities, providing unplugged family time and conserving animal species for future generations.



Position Summary:

The Director of Management Information Systems directs and coordinates development and production activities of computerized management information systems and applications for TZMI. This position takes the lead on all systems additions and upgrades, including reviewing proposals, managing project installations, and providing day-to-day support to staff. The Director of Management Information Systems also oversees IT hardware and software selection, implementation, and support, the enterprise telephone system, implementation and support of audio/visual systems, and manages the design and architecture of all company digital and online assets.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Other duties may be assigned in keeping with the mission of Tulsa Zoo Management, Inc. (TZMI)

  • Consults with management to analyze computer system needs for management information systems and applications, to determine scope and priorities of projects, and to discuss system capacity and equipment acquisitions. Manages the development, implementation, installation, and operation of information systems for the organization.
  • Serves as the internal expert and administrator for all zoo management information systems. Provides support and assistance to department directors and managers in setting up tickets, events, programs, coupons, etc. within systems to meet the zoo’s business goals.
  • Oversees the work order / issue response process for all end-user software and hardware support. Ensures rapid response to end users and quick resolution of issues. Provides the highest level of service to internal customers. Acts as administrator of the work order database for all zoo departments.
  • Working closely with the Marketing and Public Relations department, oversees the design and architecture of the zoo website and all online assets, including applications. Acts as the technical advisor and manages all projects relating to the zoo’s online presence.
  • Develops, implements, and manages reporting from management information systems, providing key information to management on system data and business statistics. Acts as advisor to VP of Finance and Administration on key performance indicators at the department and enterprise level.
  • Manages the enterprise telephone system. Makes recommendations for upgrades or changes in technology and manages all projects related to the zoo’s phone system.
  • Manages the zoo’s operating and capital budgets for IT and related projects. Monitors costs and manages expenses within allotted budgets.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors management information systems policies and controls to ensure data accuracy, security, and legal and regulatory compliance. Regularly reviews security controls to ensure effectiveness and identify new features/upgrades available.
  • Negotiates and contracts with consultants, technical personnel, and vendors for services and products.
  • Provides support to end users in the selection, procurement, usage, and maintenance of software programs, applications, and hardware.
  • Develops and maintains disaster recovery plans and backup procedures related to zoo systems and data.
  • Develops and maintains the Information Systems Security Policy and all related policies and procedures.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains an Incident Response Plan. Participates in remediating all incidents in a timely manner. Assesses the impact and makes recommendations on how to mitigate and remediate privacy and security safeguards to prevent future occurrences. Tracks all potential and actual security incidents and data breaches. Documents their outcomes.
  • Implements, monitors, and maintains updates and all security patches to all zoo systems.
  • Manages inventory of IT related assets and software licenses.
  • Promotes security awareness with staff and gives reminders on best practices. Provides training to staff as needed.
  • Proactively maintains knowledge of information systems, technology advances, and evolving threats to the zoo.
  • Creates and maintains other technology-related documentation including network maps, checklists, user training instructions, etc.


Supervisory Responsibilities:      

This position manages the IT Support Technician.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree from college or university in Management Information Systems or related field; five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Language Skills                                                    

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of TZMI employees, managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions. and percentages. Ability to apply basic concepts of algebra and geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and decimals to practical situations.


Computer Skills

Must have high-level knowledge of computer and system architecture and the ability to quickly learn how systems integrate to serve the zoo’s internal and external customers.

Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required; ability to respond to issues and outages when not on duty. Must be a strategic thinker with the ability to see how information systems work together to complement the zoo’s overall strategy and goals.
