Lead Facilities Technician

The RWPZ is currently recruiting for a full-time, year-round, Lead Facilities Technician. The Lead Facilities Technician is responsible for the general maintenance, repair and construction of all interior and exterior buildings. The individual in this position will also be called upon to assist in other areas of the Facilities Department including snow removal, minor plumbing and electrical, and other related fields of the construction trade. This position will be classified as a working foreperson position.

RESPONSIBILITIES • Provide Facilities crew with guidance and information on projects related to the department and act as an on-site supervisor for all projects. • Oversee the Facilities department in the absence of the Facilities Manager and be available for problem-solving on projects as they arise. • Research and implement plans for proper safety equipment and protocol required for all projects performed by the Facilities department, including applicable PPE and public and staff barriers. • Prior to commencements of projects, perform a detailed material take off and obtain cost estimates for all in-house projects assigned to the Facilities department. • During project construction, record all new utilities and structures and document information to asbuilt drawings for the facility. • Provide Facility Manager with detailed description of project timelines, to include materials, start and completion times, and required vendors, if applicable, to complete all work. • Maintain the department’s daily diary of all performed tasks and projects, as directed, and inventory report of all hand and power tools. • Act as a liaison with vendors for the Facilities department in the absence of the Facilities Manager. • Make periodic checks of job sites to ensure that activities are conducted in a safe and proper manner, as directed. • Ensure that all required PPE is worn by staff members while performing routine tasks and project construction. • Assist Facility Manager with conducting annual inspections of all facility roofs and recommend, as well as develop, a plan for applicable repairs or replacement. • Fabricate shipping crate, box and squeeze cage construction. • Maintenance and repair of fencing, hardware, doors, roofing, storm drains and sewers. • Construction and maintenance of non-exhibit animal holding areas. • Assist Facilities Manager with daily operations, overseeing other members of the department, supporting staff on various tasks or projects, including but not limited to, carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and severe storm preparation, clean-up and removal. • Receive and monitor work orders from Facility Manager and/or Deputy Director of Operations, pertaining to preventive maintenance, construction and repairs of facility exhibits and buildings. • Perform repair and maintenance for all rides at the zoo including our carousel, zipline, and trains. Responsibilities include training ride operators, coordinating ride inspections when annual recertification is required, and conducting daily checks on the equipment before the rides open. • The individual in this position is considered to be essential personnel should there be severe weather conditions or any zoo related emergency and is expected to respond accordingly. • Participate in snow and ice removal.

Experience Required

Required Experience and Education: Completion of an associate degree in Construction Principles or related field from an accredited college or university plus a minimum of three to five years demonstrated experience managing projects in construction or related field; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Preferred Experience and Education: One to three years of prior supervisory experience preferred. Recent experience working with diverse populations and fluency speaking additional languages a plus.
