Keeper I, African Mammals (Full-Time)

The growing, inclusive, and conservation focused Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is seeking a Mammal Keeper with responsibilities centered on care and wellness of assigned animals and maintenance of assigned areas.  Experience working with African mammals, including hoofed stock, elephants, and carnivores is preferred.  This position provides an opportunity to work with a diverse collection of animals, so the ability and skill set to work with a wide range of species is needed.  Candidates must possess solid observational and record keeping skills, an excellent safety record, a strong work history, and the ability to interact and communicate well with guests and co-workers.


  • Be aware of and follow Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Inspect, observe, feed, and medicate assigned animals as directed and provide timely reports regarding any animal health or husbandry issue or concern.
  • Maintain daily records on assigned animals including observations regarding behavior, health, and breeding activity.
  • Assist in animal procedures including translocations, immobilizations, operant conditioning, and enrichment programs as directed.
  • Maintain compliance with the regulations and standards of AZA, USDA, FWC, and OSHA.


  • Execute daily and other scheduled facility cleaning, maintenance, and safety protocols.
  • Detect and report any problems with animal containment, safety, and aesthetics of animal areas.
  • Learn and maintain compliance for protocols designed for safety of animals and humans.


  • Working knowledge of basic biology, natural history, and unique husbandry of all relevant species.
  • A basic understanding of the zoo’s history and forward progress to inform and excite guests about upcoming projects.
  • Communicate conservation information to guests and partner in delivery of education programs.
  • Demonstrate consistent professional guest interaction and education skills.

Do you have...

  • A high school diploma or equivalent. 
  • A valid Florida Driver’s license.

A Plus...

  • Associate of Science degree in a zoo technology program?
  • At least one (1) year of paid experience in animal care at an AZA accredited institution?
  • Bachelor degree in zoology or related field?

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to remain on feet for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to crawl, climb, jump, rake, stoop, sweep, bend, lift, reach and lift overhead, kneel, and carry objects for short distances.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. without difficulty.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions including rain, heat, and cold.
  • Must be able to traverse Zoo grounds on foot.
  • Must be able to operate motorized carts. 
  • Must possess visual acuity appropriate for animal care and general safety practices.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and after-hours events.
  • Must be willing and able to serve on disaster and emergency response team
