Carolina Raptor Center

Wildlife Educator

The Wildlife Educator conducts engaging and educational programs for the public with live animals. This position assists with free-flight show, resident bird care, and the creation of formal programming. 
Essential Functions 
 
A. PROGRAMS   
  • Conduct education programs, including formal onsite and offsite programs for schools, daycares, camps, etc.   
  • Assist with PhotoWILD events   
  • Provide regularly offered on-trail engagement for guests including Keeper Talks  
B. RESIDENT BIRD CARE   
  • Assist in daily care of all permanent resident birds (feeding, cleaning, watering, caretaking, health checks etc.).   
  • Training assigned resident birds for formal and informal education programs, enrichment, medical needs, etc.     
  • Assist with making and replacing birds’ equipment as needed.    
 
C. INTERPRETIVE PROJECTS   
  • Assist in implementation of existing on-site events including International Vulture Awareness Day and STEAM Day 
  • Development of new on-site events and programs 
  • Participation in off-site outreaches 
  • Assist in maintenance of BirdsInspire app 
 
D. Volunteer Docent Program 
  • Scheduling, training, and providing continuing education for volunteer docents. 
  • Working closely with the Volunteer Manager to develop and implement a docent program for the Raptor Trail and Quest Nature Center 
 
E. Administrative Tasks  
  • Assist in staff and team meetings   
  • Develop evaluation methods for programs and events and maintain data collection efforts     
  • Ensure events and programs are appropriately scheduled and marketed in a timely manner  
  • Develop programs that invite a diverse audience  
  • Assist in organizational committees and teams as needed  
  • Participate in continuing education opportunities   
Work in this position will include sitting, walking, bending, standing, lifting weights in excess of 20 lbs., hearing, stooping, balancing, depth perception, kneeling, reaching, driving a vehicle, and the ability to speak and stand for significant periods of time during educational programs. 
 
Exposure to weather, extreme heat or cold, high noise intensity level, wet and/or humid conditions. Worker will be directly responsible for the wellbeing of live animals. This includes food preparations, equipment repair, and enclosure maintenance. 
 
This is a full-time, exempt position, reporting to the Education Manager. Benefits include: Health, Dental, Vision, and PTO

Minimum Qualifications · Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Zoology, Environmental Education or related field. · 1-3 years' experience working in education with live animals Knowledge, Skills and Abilities · Excellent public speaking skills and stage presence while working with animals and performing for the public. · Ability to perform to high standards with tight and demanding time schedules. · Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with staff, volunteers, public, and media. · Ability to effectively prioritize work/goals and manage time appropriately. · Self-motivated and an ability to work independently with minimal supervision · Ability to lead, coach and inspire all members of the team. · Proficiency in multiple social media outlets: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. · Professional manner · Understanding of CRC mission
