Lee Richardson Zoo

Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kansas has been accredited by the AZA for 36 years. It is home to hundreds of native and exotic animals. The Zoo features over fifty beautifully landscaped acres, spacious animal habitats, walking paths, playgrounds, picnic areas, and shady avenues for guests of all ages to enjoy. One of our goals is the conservation of the world's rare and endangered species. Zoo is open year-round, free to pedestrians, and vehicles may drive through for just $10.

Temporary/Seasonal Keeper Aide (Hoofstock focus)

The Lee Richardson Zoo has an opening for a Temporary Keeper Aide. This is a temporary Full-Time paid position ($11.50 an hour, 40 hours per week).  Successful candidates will follow instructions in caring for the residents of the zoo and other related duties as assigned including diet preparation and records. The ability to lift 75 lbs, work outdoors in all types of weather and follow safety procedures is essential.   

Examples of Duties

  • Prepares diets for, feeds, and cleans animals and maintains exhibits.
  • Perform daily observation of animals to identify normal and abnormal behaviors related to husbandry/health issues; coordinate with senior staff on animal training programs to facilitate husbandry behaviors.
  • Communicate questions or concerns regarding medical/health issues of specimens in the collection to the supervisor.  Assist with treatment as directed.
  • Provides behavioral and psychological enrichment for animals.
  • Communicate with visitors as needed for educational and behavioral/safety purposes.
  • Disposes of trash and debris in the zoo.
  • Maintains landscaping and grounds for exhibits.
  • Services and maintains tools and equipment and facilities.
  • Follows all safety rules and regulations, policies, and procedures. Attends regular safety meetings.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of animal diet preparation, general biology, and behavior.  Skill in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment. Knowledge of maintenance methods and materials.  Ability to receive, understand, and carry out verbal and written instruction, direction, and assignments. Ability to perform physical work activities in varying weather conditions. Ability to communicate and cooperate with city employees and to deal with the public in an effective and positive manner.

Experience Required

B.S. Degree in one of the life sciences; OR an equivalent combination of experience working with animals and/or education. Previous zoo experience is beneficial but not required.

Further Comments

Valid driver's license required.
