The Director of Information Technology provides visionary leadership along with pragmatic management and financial oversight of all IT activities in support of the mission of the zoo.

Responsible for the design, plan, implementation and evaluation of the department’s short and long-term goals, strategies and measurable outcomes.


  • Develop a vision, strategy, and implementation priorities for IT infrastructure, new technologies and services. As necessary develop new and/or redesign existing infrastructure to meet the needs of internal stakeholders and external audiences.
  • Plan, direct and lead the IT staff and outsourced IT services providers, overseeing the development of IT standard operating procedures, user policies, and training/orientation for staff and service providers.
  • Oversee the development of an IT strategic plan (business plan) to 1) improve information and knowledge sharing throughout and beyond the organization and 2) assist the zoo in managing IT budget and increase productivity. As appropriate, work with grant writers to develop proposals in support of IT initiatives.
  • Provide support for a wide range of specialized and enterprise software such as TRACKS (animal and medical records), IRIS (plant and utility georeferenced system), Portfolio (video/photographs), Raiser’s Edge (donors), Great Plains (accounting), and Salesforce.  Coordinate existing and/or develop new solutions that will support operational excellence and end-user satisfaction in each department.
  • Manage and maintain network connectivity and security 1) among the 35+ free standing structures throughout the zoo’s 45 acre campus, 2) for campus-wide public and private Wi-Fi networks, and 3) for approximately 275 permanent staff. 4) consistent internet availability for guests and remote work force.
  • Develop and implement annual Operating Plan that provides a road-map for actions in the coming fiscal year and guides development and implementation of the institution’s annual budget for IT related expenses.
  • Coordinate across all departments the development of a detailed annual budget for technology and IT.
  • Develop clear concise policies, based on industry-wide best practices, for as examples, user access, security, support, device configuration, as well as user adds moves and changes.
  • Provide technical support to staff with a wide diversity of technical needs and skill levels (e.g., simulation modeling, maintenance/manipulation/storage of large databases, photo and digital data collection management, inter-institutional sharing of data; development/co-development of IOS software, management of shared web sites and databases).
  • Oversee the hiring, professional development and continuing education for the IT staff to ensure staff and skills are appropriate to accomplish the annual Operating Plan and Strategic Plan.
  • Ensure the consistent, efficient and cost-effective delivery of information technology services and support with metric-based system uptime reporting and response planning.
  • Leverage and expand IT systems and services to ensure content and applications are able to perform for the user community in a fashion that simplifies their diverse workflows.
  • Ensure the consistency and sustainability of existing applications by creating, maintaining, and enforcing standards/procedures for implementing technical solutions.
  • Develop, maintain, and negotiate current information systems, such as contracts and fees, inclusive of service providers and their services.
  • Oversee the development, design and implementation of new applications and changes to existing computer systems and software packages.
  • Ensure the continual functioning, security and privacy of mission critical operations, systems and applications.
  • Develop, review, test, and certify all back-up and disaster recovery procedures and plans.
  • As needed, oversee the development and delivery of IT training for staff.


  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Working knowledge of various systems including enterprise, financial, network, website, and content management systems required.
  • Demonstrated experience directing large projects and system implementations.
  • Experience with contemporary Backup and Disaster Recovery technologies.
  • Ability to manage network, configuration of routers, switches, firewalls, VPN connections and other related network engineering tasks such as advanced VLANing, and QOS provisioning.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Products such as, for example, Office 365, SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive. Experience with supporting a Microsoft Active Directory environment
  • Proficiency with Aruba and Meraki based networking assets such as switches, IDS/IPS firewalls, and wireless access points
  • Ability to design, implement and conduct training sessions on any systems-related topic in an effective manner.
  • Strong analytical and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Customer service orientation and ability to work with people with all levels of computer competency.
  • Experience managing a IT helpdesk system and ensuring customer satisfaction metrics.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.



Bachelor’s degree in Business, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field required. MBA or Master’s degree in Information Systems preferred.  Microsoft and network engineering certifications preferred


7+ year’s management experience in a senior IT or consulting role required. Experience working in a non-profit environment preferred.

Work is performed primarily indoors in an office environment.

Ability to sit for long periods of time.

Ability to work in open office environment.

Ability to occasionally bend, stoop, reach and climb ladders

Ability to occasionally lift up to 35lbs.

Ability to traverse zoo grounds to facilitate deliveries, escort vendors and coordinate meetings.


May schedule work hours (evenings and weekends) to fit within the zoo’s work schedule in order to complete projects, maintenance and upgrades.

Available to work special events that may occur outside of regular work schedule, including evenings, weekends or holidays, as assigned.

Must provide proof of COVID vaccination
