Commissary Technician

The Commissary Technician performs the essential duties of the zoo’s commissary, including food preparation and storage. This position will be trained in the care of the Ambassador Animal collection and will assist in other zoo operations contributing to positive guest experiences.

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • In support of the Animal Care Department provides routine care to the Ambassador Animal area including feeding, watering, cleaning, containment, enrichment, evaluation of health status, exhibit maintenance and overall animal wellness.
  • Prepares daily diets for Zoo's animal collection, follows written and oral instructions concerning type and quantity of foods to be prepared and size of portions, obtaining necessary ingredients from the /barn/coolers/freezers, and washing, cleaning, peeling, dicing and/or slicing as required.
  • Orders animal food and related supplies, maintaining an adequate animal food inventory, including assisting with town runs for additional diet supplies.
  • Will assist in receiving deliveries and checking against packing slips including  using bobcat (forklift) when needed
  • Properly rotates animal food stocks to ensure that older items are used first discarding expired items.
  • Ensures that animal food is being stored properly to maximize freshness and to minimize contamination, pests, and spoilage.
  • Maintains the kitchen and all food storage areas, including walk-in freezers and refrigerators, in a clean, organized fashion consistent with industry, USDA, and AZA standards, ensuring that the zoo commissary is kept up to inspection standards at all times.
  • Maintains all food preparation and storage facilities and equipment.
  • Ensures that animal food is of an appropriate quality through inspection at arrival and at the time of preparation, as well as through submission of diet samples to appropriate labs for nutritional analysis.
  • Follows USDA food safety and preparation guidelines.
  • Communicates with the Animal Care Supervisors, Veterinarian, and Curator, to address diet-related issues.
  • Actively contributes to positive guest experiences.
  • Contributes to saving animals in the wild through:  reduction of waste, water and energy use and inspiring guests and staff to take wildlife protecting actions
  • Will assist in pest control through the use of exclusion or traps.
  • Will perform minor maintenance on buildings, yards, and surrounding areas.  This may include watering, pulling weeds, string trimming, replacing light bulbs, painting, etc. 
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned 
  • Use of private vehicle may be required.

Experience Required

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience • One year of food preparation experience in a commercial food facility or 1 year of animal care experience in a zoological facility preferred
