Brandywine Zoo

The Brandywine Zoo is managed by Delaware State Parks with the support of the Delaware Zoological Society. This quaint facility is home to a variety of species. At Brandywine Zoo, visitors return again and again to see our animals in natural settings. Delaware State Parks is one of three state park systems accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and winner of the 2021 NRPA Gold Medal Award as best state park system in the country.

Manager of Volunteers

This position will have responsibilities for the Brandywine Zoo.  The principal responsibilities of the position include hands-on leadership of volunteers, administrative requirements for the volunteer program to ensure all policies and procedures are followed and cultivation of relationships both internally and externally. This position will also require regular administrative tasks such tracking expenditures and developing systems for recording important program data. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled.

Essential Functions

  • Provides volunteer management and coordination duties under the direction of the Office of Volunteer and Community Involvement.
  • Recruits, interviews and selects volunteers.
  • Supervises volunteers and volunteer service projects.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
  • Assesses the need for volunteers and volunteer projects through consultation with park personnel.
  • Develops new volunteer opportunities to meet mission objectives.
  • Assigns and places volunteers.
  • Conducts volunteer orientation and training.
  • Coordinates volunteer recognition.
  • Maintains and reports on hours of service and other records as required.
  • Assists in Statewide volunteer events as requested.
  • Assists and coordinates with Friends organizations.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Experience Required

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: 1. Six months experience in using standard computer software programs for word processing, spreadsheets or databases. 2. Six months experience in supervising groups, staff or volunteers. 3. Knowledge of natural, cultural, historical resources or parks and recreation. 4. Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation. 5. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).


$14.75/ hour (non benefitted)
