Principal Park Naturalist
Under direction of the Zoo Director, supervises, plans, develops and conducts programs designed to educate the public about animals, their environment and conservation of endangered ecosystems found locally and globally. Promote the mission of the Bergen County Zoo and other related work.
Specific Tasks & Responsibilities Include:
- Supervises staff engaged in conducting tours, classes, field trips, events at the Bergen County Zoo
- Plans the daily, weekly and monthly work programs and develops effective work methods
- Highlights animal ecosystems, ecology and conservation measures to classes, visitors and outreach groups
- Prepares, identifies appropriate subject matter for educational/instructional presentation, and outlines content and appropriate lesson plans. Evaluate quality, content and activities and changes to current standards
- < >Prepares budget for dept. recommends fee schedules, orders materials and supplies for programsMaintain positive relationships within the work environment. Positively promotes and fosters work that improves department function and productivity.Works to meet and exceed the AZA guidelines for animal welfare. Supports the Bergen County’s Zoo vision and mission statement
- Actively participate to improve job knowledge and professional development through conferences, seminars and workshops.
- Dependable and willing to work flexible hours, weekends and holidays
- Manage Docent program so they are a productive work force in the zoo
- Schedule, guide- full time, seasonal and per diem staff and make sure all properly trained in handling animals safely for the public
Experience Required
• B.S. degree in the natural sciences, forestry, conservation, natural resources management, agriculture, park management or biology
• 5 years’ experience in the preparation and presentation of nature study, ecological, conservation, natural resources or park interpretive programs
• Ability to manage staff and volunteers
• Ability to use various electronic software used by facility
5 years exp. w3orking in an Accredited AZA Institution
Salary
$60,000- 72,000 plus benefits
