Center for Great Apes

Great Ape Caregiver

The Center for Great Apes continues to grow and currently cares for 27 orangutans and 43 chimpanzees with additional rescues arriving as soon as construction is completed this summer and fall.  Due to our rapid growth over the past two years, there are current positions open for experienced primate caregivers to help provide quality care in a sanctuary environment for these 70 great apes.  Each caregiver works with individual groups of great apes within the 12 areas at the sanctuary.
Our most recent arrivals include four orangutans from a tourist attraction in Miami.... six chimpanzees held at an exotic pet-trade breeding compound in Missouri... and eight chimpanzees from the closed Wildlife Waystation in Los Angeles.  These 18 great apes deserve compassionate care from experienced caregivers who have the patience and knowledge to help provide them with as contented and appropriate life as can be provided in captivity.
Beyond experience in the normal caregiving duties of daily cleaning, diet prep and feeding, providing creative enrichment, and lifting up to 50 pounds, applicants should have experience in positive reinforcement training and be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (including heat and humidity).  Additionally, applicants must have a current negative TB test and proof of COVID19 vaccination and booster.
The Center for Great Apes is located  in south central Florida in a rural area amidst orange groves and pastureland. Distance from nearby towns:  Wauchula and Avon Park are 10-15 minutes away, Sebring is 20 minutes, Lake Wales is 30 minutes, Lakeland is 60 minutes, and Orlando and Tampa are 90 minutes north.
