OST Coordinator and Relief Ambassador Animal Care
The OST Coordinator is responsible for the overall management, development, and implementation of after school programming, school break programming, and summer programming, including supervision of its staff and coordination with school site personnel. We are looking for an organized individual with experience in informal or formal education and animal husbandry. This education department position requires an individual that can adapt to different teaching environments and assist in the daily husbandry and behavior training of a variety of species. This position directly supervises enrichment and academic staff, group leaders, and volunteers. The OST Coordinator reports to the Director of Education.
Description of Duties:
- Oversee all Out of School Time (OST) Programming at the zoo, including Zoofari summer programming, after-school programming, and school break day programs, ages Pre-K through middle school
- Act as the Zoo liaison and primary point of contact with students, families, and schools
- Design and develop programming that incorporate student interests, required curricula and timeframes, and funders’ guidelines, and ensure their accurate implementation
- Manage 5 - 7 Zoofari groups during the months of June - August, including developing daily and weekly program schedules, communicating with guardians, keeping inventory of supplies, and placing orders
- Troubleshoot issues with staffing, participants, guardians, etc.
- Develops and maintains positive and effective relationships with educators and school officials
- Have a plan for staff call outs and coverage procedures including back up lesson plans
- Deliver in-person and virtual education programs to school groups, scout groups, and the general public both on and off site
- Ambassador animal care including daily husbandry, animal handling trainings, and animal behavior trainings on a relief basis (usually 2 days per week)
Skills:
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple projects; time management skills and flexibility a must
- Strong computer and data management skills, including Microsoft Office
- Strong public speaking skills and the ability to disseminate information to groups of all sizes
- Able to adapt to new situations and experiences
- Ability to work well with a diverse group of staff and volunteers
- Ability to work productively in a semi-structured environment with frequent interruptions
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Creativity, patience, persistence, responsibility
- Willingness to enthusiastically engage in fun activities for children
Additional Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a background check.
- Ability to work outdoors under various weather conditions.
- Valid state driver’s license.
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 30 pounds.
- Covid-19 Vaccination
Full time, 35 hour a week position including one weekend day
Experience Required
• Bachelor’s Degree in education, biology, environmental education or a related field
• Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards and New York State Science Learning Standards
• Experience working with youth, informal or formal teaching experience
• Experience working in a nonprofit organization, zoo, aquarium, or other informal education facility
• Knowledge of and experience with animal husbandry and animal behavior training, particularly tractable ambassador animals
